valve cover replacement
I'm getting ready to sell the x5 and one of the issue that I've always known is the valve cover leaking. Changed the valve cover gasket a couple times and the last time around the shop said the valve cover is either cracked or warped. (i used Victor Heinz gasket both times) So looking around ebay for used valve cover i found one that came off a bmw 328 with the same part number as my x5 (3.0) part number is 11121432928. I understand the 2.8 and 3.0 share some common parts, is it possible that the valve cover itself is the same between these two cars. Also would the valve cover from an 03 x5 3.0 work on my 01 3.0? the part numbers are different but not sure how they are different.

just make it easy and get the proper valve cover for your vehicle.
You'll be happy with the correct parts and the buyer will be happy that you did it the right way instead of cutting corners.

Yes I would also choose an OE valve cover gasket from BMW instead of the Victor Reinz. Also some permatex sealer in the right places makes a huge difference in outcome.

Looking at Pelican parts, i'm not sure which is OEM: Victor Reinz (considered OEM supplier which is why i used it in the past), Elring Klinger (also oem supplier), Goetze (OEM supplier) , Corteco CFW (OEM supplier)... Goethe and Erring have 5star (customer review) and Victor is 4.5.
which brand do you all use?

I personally used an Elring valve cover gasket on mine, many people have told me to stay away from the victor Reinz as they tend to develop leaks very very fast(as I found out with my 540...).
Haven't had any leaks at all in over 2 years now.

i'm ordering my parts from autohauosaz and they only have goetze brand on their site. I need to see if the local euro parts has any elring gaskets.

When OEM suppliers produce parts for a vehicle manufacturer (for production vehicles & OE parts supply) they manufacture the parts using materials/processes/tolerances specified by the manufacturer, these are defined as OE parts (AKA, Genuine BMW). BMW has actually changed the material specs for the VC gaskets (from the original material when the M62 & M54 engines where built). The new OE gaskets are made of Viton (much more resistant to heat/oil/solvents/degreasers......and more costly!)
When OEM manufacturers produce products for sale as OEM parts/products, they produce to their own defined materials/processes/tolerances (in almost EVERY case, far below the specs set by the manufacturer). The takeaway here is, OEM parts are produced with ZERO consideration to manufacturer standards (and minimum per unit cost/maximum profit driving the production process).
