I'll keep looking at that place - looking for OEM aluminum boards which is near impossible to find - closest I found was in Massachusetts 4 hours away for $700 used (new is $975)

I would take it to a bodyshop, tell them your objective and let them negotiate with the adjuster to get the best deal for you. There is a good chance there will be more downtime if you do it yourself.

Hanging a door is not easy even with two people, and more complicated that it appears on the surface. Even a door that is the same color may not be a good color match and aligning the door is not simple either.

Be careful when you say matches because it's very unlikely you will find a door (or any painted body panel for that matter) which will match. It may be the same color but it's unlikely to match. Even a body shop is unlikely to match the paint which means they're going to have to blend it. Trust me...you will notice the difference if you find a door with the same color and install it without thinking you need to blend it.

Similar issue with my E39 1998 528i RR door (hit by another driver):
- Local Junk Yard door is $55, that includes everything that comes with the door (metal shell, interior trim, window motor, regulator, glass etc.).
- Since I only needed the door shell, I removed the other parts (interior trim, window motor, regulator, glass etc.).
- Local body shop painted the door for $350.
- I transferred all the parts over to the new door and installed the door myself.

So get the insurance check and DIY.

Just remember they are heavier than you think. Get a couple of friends to help. A transmission jack also helps a lot.
TO remove the door takes less than 10 minutes. it is the easiest door to remove ever. One bolt on each hinge (10mm I think). Remove the door brake hinge. The electrical connector. THATS IT. Lift door off of hinges.

I was able to lift door myself carefully. It seems to weigh about 150 lbs or so.

I bought a drivers door and drivers side front fender for 300.00 total. My car is black (2002 X5 4.4i) and I used BMW paint #668. I also used SPI Universal Clear. The base paint will be easy to match. Its the CLEAR that needs proper matching. SPI clear comes close. I probably will reclear entire car with SPI. Its a beautiful clear I must add.

Ive done door swaps! they are pretty easy, youll need a big padded blanket on your transmission jack, the doors themselves are pretty heavy, glass, electronics. speakers etc. take of the interior panel.
first thing first, remove the battery leads. (there is an airbag in there, if you happen to nick or short out the wrong wire, it makes a mess! )
I removed / split the door hinges, so first off, I undid the door wiring harness (from the body unbolt it, then unclip it. ) from there I split the hinges and took it off, it was a pretty easy operation, and we were done in a few hours, even putting on all the trim wasn't that hard! (if you can get the door with all the trim it will save you a lot of time and grief!!! )
good luck!
