Crap...Hood Stuck Closed

Okay, so yesterday I replaced my passenger side hood latch to fix the old one which wasn't staying locked. All went well until I tried to open the hood again and discovered that it wouldn't unlatch. (Oh &@/#) I found out that I connected the cable to the latch. But, I didn't route it correctly. So the little spring inside the cable has nothing to brace against. I removed both grilles and tried to pull the cable. But that didn't work. Do you guys think it would be possible to cut the cable and strip away the outer casing and spring so I can access the inner wire and give it a yank?

possibly. You don't have much option, other than cut the latch and all that. Make sure you cut it somewhere you can brace against with pliers.

I think the OP did enough damage to the X. Just bring it to a dealer and see if they can fix it and what it will cost. Probably would have cost a lot less if you brought it in the first place. Sometimes it's not worth it to DIY.

I wasn't really looking for critique on my decision to DIY... More tips on releasing the latch. If I can do timing chain guides and a upper oil pan, I'll be damned if I go pay a dealer to fix my hood latch.

Vice grips to wonders in pretending to be a part of the car. You can likely get the brace you need on the outer sleeve of the cable with a vice grip and a piece of metal you can brace against something.

Thanks for the help. The hood catch was a little out of alignment. So, all I had to do was put a screwdriver in there and push it into place while a helper pulled the latch. Problem solved.

Good job. Double repair avoided.

I noticed the other day at least with my x5 the grills pop out with a good tug. Not great from a security standpoint although there is an alarm switch on the hood but fantastic from s holy shit my hood cable is rusted shut standpoint.
