If you can't unlock all the doors with the lock/unlock button on the center console, perhaps the body control module is bad.

I feel your frustration. I've had the same issue with 3 of my doors in the last year or so. I had to replace the door handle carrier which breaks over time. At first it seemed difficult but now it's become second nature to me and I'm not even that handy of a guy. You can still pull off the door panel with door closed. For front doors, just move your seat all the way back. For rear doors, pull out the cushion first to give you the clearance.

These Youtube links are very helpful. Not sure about the idea of disconnecting the battery for airbag however. I once replaced the battery and the interior lights and door lock would not work. It's something that BMW does to encourage you to come in to the dealer.
