no warning sounds for lights on?

I did a quick search but haven't had much luck.

I'm not sure these are related, but for the first week of so when I drove my new-to-me X5 ('06 3.0i) if someone sat in the passenger seat and didn't fasten their belt, it showed the warning and made the "gong" sound but sounded like it was a dying robot. It reminded me of one of my kid's electronic toys with bad batteries, just struggling to stay alive. I thought nothing of it other than "if this is the worst thing that's wrong with this car, I'll be happy". And I haven't actually heard it since but haven't had too many passengers either.

Then this past week, I accidentally left on my lights for a few hours at work and had to get a jump. It started right back up and has been fine since, but I never heard a warning sound for leaving the lights on.

My questions are:

1. Is there supposed to be a warning sound if you leave your lights on and turn off the car or remove the keys?
2. If so, could the lack of the warning sound be related to the strange "dying" seatbelt warning sound?
3. Is there a small "gong" part or something in the dash that might need replacing?

Thanks!

Sorry, I did just find this in my search and assume it's what I need:

I find it's pretty funny that it's actually called a warning "gong". At nearly $60, I'll first check the connection, but will probably just pass or try to find a working used one.

There's a test for the gong you can run, before buying a new unit.

Search this forum for info. on how to unlock the dash computer diags. and one of the tests is of all the dash lights and the gong.

Found it... test #13

http://www.xoutpost.com/1007582-post12.html

There are a few minor variations to this in some vehicles - my own 3.0d has SI-L in test #3 (litres consumed since last service rather than distance since last service - but most are correct.

Ditto about doing OBC Test 13 (first)...that way you can find out if the gong is actually dead...or if you have another issue.

BMW OBC Test #13 "GONG?" This is a test of the OBC/Check Control System's gong/chime/beep sounds:

  1. You will hear the HOUR MEMO signal first which is a succession of 3 beeps.
  2. Second you will hear the ICE WARNING/OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE (gong).
  3. Third sound is the speed LIMIT MPH warning and LOW FUEL warning (gong).
  4. Fourth is the sound you hear for all other warnings from the Check Control System like the LOW COOLANT, STOP ENGINE PRESSURE, etc.

Great feedback. I'll try the tests out today. Had no idea you could any of that. Thanks!

That's a good point...if a PO (previous owner) didn't like the accoustic warnings...they could have coded them off. See the far right column below...which is a screen shot of software that allows you to communicate with the IKE to code on/off the listed accoustic warnings:

Ok, thanks for the help. I ran the gong test #13 and some others just for fun (kinda disappointed I can't check transmission fluid temp though - would be helpful during level checking and fluid fill up).

Anyhow, I heard absolutely nothing during the Gong test. I highly doubt the PO would have disabled all of the sounds and the fact that I heard the "dying" seatbelt sound at one point somewhat confirms that. All the pins and wires looked good and connections were tight on the gong part so I've pulled it and am doing some searching to test that on the benchtop (found a youtube video and a link with pin assignments for the e39 gong which looks very similar).

The BMW Gong/Chime Module (E31 E32 E34 E36 E38 E39 E46 E52 E53 E83 E85 E86 Z3)

Once I've confirmed it's a bad gong as I suspect and not the wiring or settings, I might bite the bullet and buy a new one. I've already spent more time on this than I'd hoped and might as well go all the way. Thanks!

No sounds from the benchtop test either. Ordered a used gong in "good working condition"with same part # for < $8 shipped from eBay with a 30-day warranty. Will update the thread with results for future searchers...
