Help coding

So I'm getting my feet wet with coding and successfully changed some of my car/key memory functions with Progman. It seems though I am limited to what I can do with Progman, for example which lites come on with high beam, manipulating bulb checks and so on. Do I need to use NCS to access these options ? When I choose to "encode" a module in Progman and it seems to read the module and write back to it, what exactly is happening ?? Does it restore the module back to factory settings or does it load a file that can be manipulated somehow ?

Not familiar with progman yet, but the things you listed can be accessed and changed with NCSexpert.

You need to know which module has the feature you want to manipulate and the script line that controls it, then use NCS to access the script of that module, change the script needed to activate/deactivate the feature, then write the changed script onto the module.

You can only access and change parameters that are already programmed into the module. Just turn stuff on/off basically. If there is no script line, you cant manipulate it.

For example, I got into coding to try to get my halogen flashers to work with my HID high beams but my particular LCM does not have the code script that allows that so I cant. :/

Yes, I was hoping to avoid learning NCS but I guess I'll have to bite the bullet. I was under the impression though that Progman was the new software that would do most of what nsc could in terms of coding but more user friendly. I guess not so ;( maybe more for newer vehicles I guess.

BMW Scanner 1.4.0 will probably do all you need with a straight forward interface, no need to fully understand what is happening in the background. Just tick boxes to enable or disable various programmable options. You will need a laptop with a USB port though. Definitely runs with Windows XP, I am not sure about later operating systems.

Thanks, but I already have NCS expert and dummy so I think I'll try that route, seems to be what everybody is using anyway. It's amazing how many different software programs there are out there! I should have known better and went with the lower level program in the first place, been there, done that !

You gotta check out NCSDummy and it's free! It takes the "expert" out of NCSExpert and thus makes it even more powerful:
http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...-of-NCS-Expert

It too consists of tick boxes to enable or disable various programmable options.

My software package had an incomplete NCSdummy, so never got to use it. I hear it's good though!

Tech, NCSexpert is pretty easy, hardest part is to look for the line you want to change (which I think NCSdummy helps out with).

OK, I have Expert and dummy working although they are older versions. It was much easier than I thought. The tutorials seem to make it look a lot harder than it really is, at least to get started with the easy stuff.

You can get the latest ncsdummy from the link above. Yes, the tutorial is somewhat intimidating going into too much detail right in the outset. He probably should have had an initial section narrating how to quickly get started, much like how great electronics equipment setup manuals are organized- a quick setup instructions section followed by a section with detailed setup instructions with customizations etc.

Yep, a "quick start version" or maybe even a block diagram showing how NCS and dummy work together. Thanks X5only, already downloaded newer version
