Not to hijack thread, but are there common issues that cause what I'm describing? Guibos have been recently replaced.

That's a good question for Family Feud. My first overall jolt cause guess would be sway bar links but I would be holding my breath to see if it was on the board.

In your case I don't know enough about your particular symptoms to take a guess. Do you define a jolt as a big scary noise accompanied by a jerk like when you pull the slack out of a tow strap going 35 MPH? Does it happen at the instant you start to mildly accelerate without the transmission downshifting and just as you let off the gas? Does it happen when traveling in a straight line? Does it happen every time you accelerate or let off the gas? Does it feel and sound the same each time it happens?

I had a few of the "slam shifts" prior to replacing the transfer case chain.

Issue has been resolved with the new/tight chain.

TiAg - you ever used to get the "jolt" from the driveline on the highway if you were kind of coasting, and then went on the throttle decently? Sometimes I notice it on my 5MT, even without shifting - I always chalked it up to the age of the vehicle, my miles are at 90k, someone told me a while back that a bit of driveline lash is normal especially on the manual trans models because they are a bit harsher, but I'm wondering now maybe if I should check the Tcase chain out.

I had the "jolt" going from coasting to aggressive acceleration at highway speeds. Had to "feather" into the throttle to avoid it.

With the new chain and front flex disc (slight cracking in rubber, really not that bad), I can drive hard without loose driveline "jolt".

^This sounds exactly like what I have - I will have to look into the TC chain and a flex disc - any other items I should be addressing? I know the pre-facelifts have the driveshafts that can get stripped out - maybe I'll get a longer spline section welded on and grease up the splines good

Interesting, I noticed this on our last trip as well.... When accelerating hard while coasting, it feels like something in the driveline has to catch up, then it grabs and goes... Not at all like a slipping transmission... If I'm cruising along in say 3rd, and manually holding that gear, and abruptly take my foot off the gas it feels like something in the driveline has some slop to it, takes just a bit for the driveline to go against where engine rpms slow it down... Then some play again when I accelerate till it catches up the slack in the opposite direction... Gonna start with the guibos, since I've never replaced them. Work my way towards the TC chain... There are 2 guibos, correct?

^^Yes I believe so but don't quote me - but yeah I'm thinking its definitely prob the TC chain as your symptoms and what TiAgX5 describes is what I have - almost like the driveline bangs as it tries to catch up to throttle input - if you step on it gently, no jolt or "lash" so to speak

Tiag, what kind of time did you get into replacing the chain?

You should be able to check for the loose chain thru the drain plug hole.

Really nothing other then flex discs or TC chain that could cause the isolated hwy driveline jolt.

Excessive ring/pinion backlash and/or worn cv joints would show symptoms in many driving conditions and loads.
