Inlet Camshaft Control B1 and B2

2002 X5 4.4. The SAV was running great before I did the timing chains and guides. I had all the proper alignment tools, cam locks, and sensor wheel alignment tool, etc. 35 years working as a backyard mechanic some years in a shop, with 1 test away from being a ASE Master Mech.

I have not driven it yet.
Went to start it today and it started but ran rough. Turned it off and found I didn't plug the #5 coil in. Plugged it back in and started again, still ran rough for about a minute then smoothed back out. The the light was on so checked the codes with my icarsoft i910. Code 21 and code 22, Function, inlet camshaft control banks 1 and 2. Cleared the codes and light still on with codes 21 and 22. If I let it sit for about 1/2 hour it is very hard to start but eventually does. If I do a restart it fires right up. It has a hesitation and the RPM's fluctuate up and down a bit just off idle. After I bring it up to 1K or more it is smooth.

From what I've been reading, the cam sensor wheels are adjusted wrong. I used the proper tool to align them. Should I take it out for a ride to see if it clears up or realign the sensor wheels? Or suggestions?

Maybe a year ago someone doing this managed to switch the bank 1 and bank 2 cam position sensor wires. Are you sure you haven't done the same?

Very unlikely driving it will make it go away. That will just stress the engine. You have to find the problem. However irritating that may be...

I remember that post, it was the sensors that were switched. The sensors are not the same.

Disconnect the cam sensors on the wire harness and then start the vehicle up to see if it runs smoothly. If its running smooth then you can adjust the cam sensor wheels for proper advancement and retarding. If the vehicle does not run smooth after disconnecting the sensor input wires then the vehicle is out of timing and will have to be re-timed.

Disconnected the battery last night. Just hooked it up and it ran smoothly and the ses light went out. 5 seconds later it came back on and started to run rough.

Did the same with the same results. (1 hour later)

Pulled the sensors plugs, started ran smoother, seems a bit rough at idle but rest of rpms were smooth and quick. Plugged sensors back in and ran the same with them plugged in. Still has the SES 21 and 22.

I did not unplug sensors from the black boxes.

Watched most of video. Yes I am bored....but, not sure if your SES light is on. If it is, that is why your VANOS is staying at 94%, with the light on, the computer goes into open loop and nothing on the VANOS is working. You need to get everything to spec and keep the SES light off to proceed with readings.

Yup the SES light is on. Trying to get information on the proper spec. Do I need to replace the Vanos, Vanos sensors, CPS, or? I used all of the right tools for setup and read and watched everything I could to ensure I did it right. Even took pictures and a short clip during installation. Made sure I got continuity through the Vanos. Getting all the information I can to make an educated guess.

I did not know the specs for the Vanos and the 94% was just a number to me so TY for that information, now I have another avenue to chase. I was going to put the "If you are bored" into the thread.

Also trying to figure what the KW stands for in the 12 degrees KW. Klockwise?

Perhaps you can get a regular scanner that just do OBD II. The SES light is only triggered for OBD II trouble codes.

Went out started it again, no ses light for half hour of running. Turned it off and reset codes. Restarted and no codes or light. Ran for about 15 minutes. Turned off and restarted got the ses light and codes. Got a C9 DTML also. Going to look at the pump tommrow and get scanner from my son too. Looked at live data on my scanner. Bank 1 no movement and stayed on 12 degrees cr on all 4 cylinders . Bank 2 had varied movement on all 4 cylinders up to 12. See what codes I get on the regular scanner.
