X5 COIL CONVERSION???

Anyone convert their old X5 3.0 rear air bag system only with a set of coil springs? I have HD Bilsteins all the way around and it rides nice and firm.
Do the coil springs create a softer/bouncier rear? Will it still handle well?
Currently riding around on deflated bags and it's OK.
Help.. need to fix this soon and make a decision. I found coils for 180. complete kit and the cancel out module is $249 to remove the dash light.
Thanks...
J

A properly converted suspension will be fine.

Some 3.0's came with standard coil and shock absorber rear suspensions. Mine is one of them.

There are a few on here who have done the rears, and some guys that have front and rear air have done the conversion all around too (Awntchi in his 4.8is off the top of my head).

A search will get you some info as it has been discussed here a few times over the years.

ETA: on coils being soft/bouncy - not necessarily. I find the 3.0i with all coil sport suspension and 19" wheels a bit more firm than the 4.6is with 20" wheels and rear air.

Just do the research on exactly what suspension you have so you can get the right parts to properly convert the rears.

I have non air on my 3.0 sport package. The ride is pretty firm.

Just did it and very happy with it. I've used German made Suplex rear coils which are identical to OEM. $170 at Eeuroparts. Get $30 Chinese copy PA soft scan tool as I did and removing Suspension warning light is extremely easy:

I did convert my 4.8is (like g300d said), all 4 corners with BC Racing coilovers. The ride is just as good as with airbags and can be adjusted to even better...both height and stiffness. I'm very happy with it. As for cancelling out the warning with a module I wouldn't bother with that....it can easily be cleared with BMW Scanner and for less than $30 (assuming you have a win xp or 7 laptop).

Great. Are there any special tools needed? Did you gut out the air system for weight reduction? Need a spring compressor? Have to disconnect the shocks? I have HD Bill's installed.

Since I had bags all around, all I needed to do when removing them was to deflate them first...Everything else is super simple. Also, I used coilovers so they just slide right in without hassle or need for any special tool. Now I left the rear bags in the same place just deflated/disconnected and installed the coilovers in the "shock area" (hope that makes sense). I need to take out the bags though as they make noise when hitting bumps, I was in a rush when did this job hence why left them there. Everything else is in its place just disconnected. Try if you can to align them (top mounts) as close as you can to the original markings....it will ease the tracking later.
