Transponder/EWS

I suppose this can be fixed assuming the chip in the key is still good...

Wifey ran out for some groceries.
Upon opening the door, alarm sounded....keyfob works but no crank.
Headed out there with our bad key (it starts car but remote funtions dead), and it cranks the car just fine.

Figuered maybe the EWS might reset itself bearing a good start. Headed home together and after a couple tried, the good key *that has working remote*, just won't turnover the car...

I suppose buying a new key is FINALLY in order.....as it's probably going to be cheaper than tech time, if the key can be synched back to the EWS...

I held off buying a replacement as the X is sorta on a 1 year'ish countdown to being sold.

What are the slim chances the rolling code are just out of sync and this good key is disabled. We were talking this morning and she said when she pulled the door handle, the alarm sound and she just disarmed the car with the same good key. Hence, upon that, the good key would not turnover.

I've never looked into it, but this has happened time2time over the years. It's either sometimes you arm the system and alarm is armed, but all doors lock except the drivers side door.

Even is the key is disabled, kinda pointless for tech time - probably will just ask my Indy to poke around whenever I'm in his hood. Going to order a new key. ? is which direction to go with. OE or O EEE M

I've got 2 masters on her keychain now. On that has remote working functions, that latter that will turn it over.

Keys should be ordered from BMW and coded as such. You should just get the vehicle scanned and see if an EWS code comes up and then address it from there.

Perhaps you can send the key that doesn't crank/start the engine to this guy for repairs

After he fixes the key so that it will start the car, you can send him the other key to fix the FOB portion of the key.

You can always use the key to open the driver side door instead of the FOB.

I looked at this briefly. Either direction I go, I would probably opt for oe or 3rd party key as the cost differential for a ~new~ versus repaired key is not that much...

The part of the key that remotely unlocks the car and the part of the key that allows the engine to start (transponder) are totally seperate and have NOTHING to do with each other.

I cut my own keys and program them. I made one key with only a transponder. Works fine to start and drive the car. The transponder talks to the EWS. The remote for the door locks talks to the General Module. Literally they have nothing to do with each other.

The Transponder requires no power and has no battery (looks like a little chip in your hand and will function sitting in your hand that way). The door unlocking part has a battery, requires power and can be operated outside of the key away from the transponder if you like.

The door unlock part is user programable using the key and the car only. The transponder requires special tools and codes (codes can be read from the EWS).

Quick update. Got my keys back from bmwgm5. For a benny even, I got 2 working remotes.

One of them - lock button was no good. Probably bad switch.
All good now.

Latter. Would not crank car. This is what started the whole homework....
2nd key - all good.

Did not need to send in the EWS for this no crank situation.
Was able to use the car this whole entire time with the non remote keys, so no downtime involved.

The only drawback at the end of the day, is I know the keys are not as ~sealed~ as when when they were plastic-welded shut...but I knew this going in

--just because--- I feel like it's finally showing her age, I'm going to stash the plastic valet onboard the car somewhere.

Wifey got lucky. She called me and was only 5 minutes away when the key decided to not crank the car.
