Muffler/Tip combo

Anyone know any good muffler/tip combos?

Bought the vibrant performance 1040 mufflers but unfortunately the muffler itself is too long.

Any other recommendations before I end up going to the local shops in town asking what kind of mufflers they have. Being loud is fun but not when you have to deal with drone noise and only have an inline-six engine. Still looking for a great sound with minimal drone. Looking to do quad tips as I think it'll look better on the 3.0i

Seems like it's hard to find a muffler/tip combo.

Yeah, not many makers offer a muffler that short, it has to be around 11-12" and most are usually 14"-up.

I recall Borla has one in the racing muffler section of their catalog.

You can use a cannister muffler tilted a bit. Someone online posted pics of Magnaflow cannisters mounted that way on his 3.0 X5.

As I posted in your first thread, have you looked into putting on 4.6/4.8is OE mufflers on? Quite a few here have done it and are happy with them.

Most of the 4.6/4.8 mufflers i'm coming across run north of $500. I know it's with the whole exhaust but i'm just looking for the mufflers/tips.

The 4.6/4.8is mufflers are a nice addition to the 6 cylinder X5s and fits very oem. Just have a muffler shop cut and add in the IS mufflers and you will be pleased. I am sure a number of X5 outpost enthusiasts that have done this mod can chime in and provide their personal insight on this mod.

I've got some pictures of my custom muffler installs with quad tips. Two different setups. One with 4" canister magnaflows and another with Aero AR25's. The magnaflows were better for the drone issue. They were longer. I would say go even longer than I did and you would be quite happy. My Ar25 setup is droning at 2-3k under load with my headers. I'm addressing it now. A plus in ditching the "gonzo nose" mufflers is a little pep in the butt dyno and an MPG or so. One last note, you can pick up some pretty awesome carbon fiber Akrapovic style quad tips for not a whole lot of coin. You can fit 3.5 inch tips nicely. I'm going to try 4 inch quads this spring when I do my exhaust updates. Might be over the top, but I'm willing to try.

Edit. I guess I should read. Your running headers too. Did you delete the rear mufflers and are you still running the center resonator with an X pipe? Or did you delete that as well? You should post a clip for me to hear your setup. As stated Above, I got the 2-3k drone going on. Hate it. Love the bark of the loud exhaust, but the drone...... .

I'm looking to add in an x-pipe, most likely a resonated tru-x from magnaflow or Jones. Just curious of you impressions. Did the x-pipe help with savaging and how did it do with tone?

I got a beautiful Eisenmann exhaust that was pulled off an X5. Its a no drone system and beautiful sounding on the X5. PM me if you want to know or interested.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
The 4.8 mufflers are different from the 4.6's even though the tips are the same. The 4.8 mufflers are the "throatier" ones. I have them on my X, little more grumble but still oem quiet. I contemplated deleting the resonator and adding a magnaflow resonated Xpipe but I don't want much more noise and want to maintain zero drone. It's not a race car this 5MT 3 ton X5

The rear muffler delete was the first mod I did along with replace the tips. I'm running the center resonator with a custom x-pipe. I would post a clip but the X has been down since last tuesday. Waiting for a replacement steering rack since the one i received was faulty.

It's weird cause I've could've sworn I saw someone on this forum who has the same muffler/tip combo. It was in their sig. Maybe they got the shorter version of it who knows.

Here's the guy who put on Magnaflow cans at an angle: 2004 BMW X5 Exhaust

GD, I've been wondering about cans for our trucks but worried it would sound shitty. So the long cans look to work without drone in your experience?

Unfortunately I don't think that video does the exhaust any justice. That sounded pretty bad. I suspect you would have to hear it in person to make a better assessment of the sound.
