IVM is actually for Integrated Supply Module. But it has the acronym of IVM.

The IVM is in a compartment located at the passenger windshield cowl area. But, I doubt it's that. My 05 4.4 has a slight flutter at idle as well and I have replaced the IVM recently and it had no effect.

I changed mine and it made a BIG difference . Idle was at 500 rpm now at 650, I was also getting low oil pressure reading at start up , not any more

Nope, in the engine bay on the passenger side. In the relay/electronics box.

I don't believe the IVM was a part of the 4.4 or 3.0 engine options. Only the later N62 4.8is has an IVM in the electrical box.

I thought the 4.4L on a 2004 engine is a N62? So only certial applications of the N62 got this architecture?

You are correct. The IVM for a BMW E53 is found on the following models:

E53-X5 4.4i-(04-06)
E53-X5 4.8is-(04-06)

Yep, all N62 equipped X5's have one. Also all 5's, 6's, and 7's I believe. Basically anything with an N62.

I found the part I need on Amazon.
99 dollars and it's already been shipped.
It may or may not improve anything.
Either way, where I live it gets so damn hot, that
parts that don't do well in the heat fail regularly.

It's not much of an expense to swap out for preventative maintenance.
I pulled the cowling screen and popped off the electrical cover.
I found the module and it looks easy to change.

I am getting a whirring noise and need to investigate the belt drive system.
It's a pulley, or alternator or something there that spins.
