I just want some clarification so I'm 100% sure I'm thinking correctly while diagnosing this problem. I have the infamous trifecta and CEL pop up, the engine failsafe mode came on too. I scanned the car using INPA and got the following codes: 211 - ICV stuck 227 - Fuel trim (bank 1) at limit 228 - Fuel trim (bank 2) at limit I popped off the airbox tract to get to the ICV. It wasn't extremely dirty, and I could hear it rattle inside. I cleaned it anyway, checked for any holes in the intake boots, and put it back together. I ended up with the same codes after 150 miles of driving. The MAF is 2 years old, the DISA is around 6, and the intake manifold is free from any oil. Could the ICV still be "stuck" even though I hear it rattle around? Before I drop $150 on a new ICV, I'd like a second opinion on what you guys might think this is.

I had the same shit. Very intermittent and frustrating. This second time I pulled the icv and it seemed sticky. I cleaned it with carb cleaner (was told it contained a lubricant). If it comes back I'll replace the ICV.

I was able to go on ifixedit thanks to work and searched up the P0172 generic code I got. The report pointed to a MAF issue, according to 25 shops. Does anybody think it could be MAF related even though the BMW scanner doesn't mention it?
I'll be cleaning the MAF with some contact cleaner this weekend. I got to get this car running better as it's getting too cold to be running on summer tires on the E36 Sent from my Sero 7 Pro using Tapatalk

Bump...calling all experts.
I've cleared the codes and replaced the air filter. No chance to clean the MAF yet. After 150 miles of driving, the car still hasn't set the evap drive cycle. So it's sounding more like the ICV, no?

MAF can be tricky to diagnose, sometimes you need to try a known good unit to verify. You could try cleaning the IAC/ICV again with some air intake cleaner(maybe rinse that with the contact cleaner) NOT carb cleaner. I would say the fuel trim codes more likely point to a vacuum leak(maybe CCCV) than a bad MAF or IAC.

Sounds like an air leak to me too. Do you have a scan tool to post the LT/ST fuel trim data?

Ok, I'll log fuel trims tomorrow and post them up. I don't recall them being super high to adjust for more air, but we'll see.

No update with getting fuel trims. I've put another 100 miles on it so far, with no CEL. I'm pretty sure the drive cycles are set by now, so I don't have much more interest in digging deeper.
I'll update with fuel trim information if the CEL pops on again.
