Preventative time... Suggestions??

Monday my X is headed for my Indy, time for timing chain guide replacement, also plan on replacing both vanos lines, pulley's on front, oil separator, replacing all vacuum lines. I'm kinda going off of fellow member's (stunt) list. I'm an awed follower of his posts. Any suggestions on what is a must do, while I'm taking care of all of this? My engine currently has just a little over 100K miles on it, this is the used engine that I had put in when my first one failed due to timing chain guide fail at 134K. Also plan on getting new bushing pressed into my thrust arms...

Maybe a good time to do the valley pan gasket as well?

New belts to go along with the new pulleys?

Do check the drive belt tensioners as well. I'm not sure about the 4.6 but on the 3.0 we have a hydraulic tensioner with bushings that are replaceable.

Cooling system hoses, do check them while they are out.

Diff (synthetic 75w90 GL4) and transfer case (ATF in your pre-Xdrive) fluids?

Trans fluid? (controversial, some do not recommend this, I personally have done it with no problems)

If you have excessive negative camber in the rear, I would look at the rear upper wishbone. It may be whole but it's bushing often deforms and is not centered. also look at the rear locating link, its ball joint boot is often torn by now and joint itself often has play. I would replace both. I have tried it on two X5's now and it has gotten rear camber into spec and closer to new stability both times.

What are you looking to accomplish Matt? driveline, engine maintenance, etc?

I'd be sure to flush/bleed the brakes if you haven't, driveline fluids is a good suggestion, your option for trans, but the diffs and transfer case is a good idea at 100k.

If getting thrust arms done have your indy replace that ball joint on the arm as well (they are like $60 for the pair and can be done with the thrust arm bushing), also have him check condition of outer CV boots.

The possibilities are endless with yours, let us know what you've done so far....

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll make a list and give it to my mechanic. I'm kinda wanting to concentrate on the engine. I'm buying a house that we're moving into in a month, with a nice shop on it, so I'm planning on doing a lot of DIYing on everything else.

I dunno, but if you're going to have a ton of stuff out of the way, then get the hard to access parts replaced and save the easy ones for yourself. Heater hoses perhaps? However, it's always easy to think you'll have time to do it yourself but with buying a new house, decorating, trips antiquing, etc., you're screwed...lol

Haha, yep, I pretty much had to promise to let my wife go hog wild with the house, since I'm putting so much money in the X. I'm sure the first year after moving in wild be a wild card of honey do's, decorating, rearranging, etc, etc... Seriously tho, she's pretty cool with me and the X, and money!

Dropped it off on Monday, will be gone this weekend, but plan on picking it up this following Monday. I'll update you all with everything done. Sounds like I'll be getting a ton of suspension stuff done, my Indy said lot of it was shot. I'm itching to get in it after he's finished..!

Ditto on the fluids... if you're doing the pulleys you my as well do the water pump, maybe thermostat and upper/lower hose and temp sensor.
