Spark Plugs
i replaced by my plugs with NGK Iridium Ix Spark Plug (BKR6EIX), pic below: I'm getting rough idles now constantly. Did i use the wrong plugs. I didn't gap them, i assumed they were pre gapped to fit my car, 03 X5 4.4i. While searching online, some ppl suggested to clean the coils with dielectric grease. Help!!!! |

Did you torque the plugs properly? Were any of them dripping in oil?

i don't have a torque wrench, i tighten them with regular wrench. none was "dripping" in oil, but a couple had some burnt oil residue. do i need to torque them in? if so, whats the torque?

I've only used Bosch or NGK BKR6EQUP. Both have 4 prongs, and are pre-gapped.
Not saying the ones you used won't work, but the two above I thought were the OEM that were furnished with the cars. Could be wrong. |

During my lunch break, i'm considering going to the nearest advance auto, and cleaning the coils with dielectric grease. I'll see if they have a torque wrench i can borrow to torque the plugs. if that doesn't work, i'm gonna have to get new plugs. Can you return spark plugs? Oh does anyone know what the torque is for the spark plugs? |

It's not the plugs. I have Iridium IX and so do countless other members here.
I checked the gap on mine and it was fine out of the box. Torque is low on plugs I forget the spec but there is a diy thread here with it. You could also try resetting throttle body adaptation which is key in position 2 but don't start car for 2-3 minutes. Then turn key to 0 and start car.

I recently replaced my plugs too with iridiums. So far so good. We did have to check the gap though. 4 out of 8 were out of spec. Torque down 21 ft/lbs. Are you sure it's not the coils?

I'm gonna clean the coils, torque the plugs (thanks for the specs), and perform teh throttle adaptation process as ricky suggested. Thanks for the suggestions all, really appreciate it.

How old are the coils? If they are original, i'd replace all 8

This isn't an e53, but my daughter's jeep was running like you say. I replaced plugs and air filter, and it was a little better. Replaced idle control valve, and it was like a new car.
