SUBWOOFER

Hello everyone,

I was thinking for a while if I can install the OEM Subwoofer for my x5 e53 2002 if I dont have DSP sound. I have a cable on the right side back of my car. Could you please let me know if it is possible ?

Thank you

I have installed the BMW DSP subwoofer into my E53 non-DSP vehicle.

I used the high audio input from the existing wiring on the left side rear area

My parallel wiring scheme for the two 8ohm dual voice coil DSP speakers equates to a a 2ohm load. Essentially, running all the positives together to a single positive speaker connection put into the bottom of the box and you run all the negatives to the negative post of the speaker termination. Then run the output of the mono amp to the new single speaker terminals that you have put into the bottom of the DSP box.

Factory DSP box attaching Hardware: 65106905660, 07119905720, and two 16131183133

My Power Acoustik RZ1-2300D mono block amp is happy with that and is rated at 1400 watts @ 2ohms.

This can help you find the twisted pair wires to tap into to feed the high input side of the amp

http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/...ctory-amp.html

After ejecting the connector you should now see 2 connectors side by side, a gray one and a black one. The pins are numbered from 1 to 13 on the gray connector and from 22 to 34 on the black one. The pictures 6 and 7 below show the 2 connectors. On this connector Pin #1 (-) and #2 (+) are for left rear woofer and pin #24 (-) and #25 (+) are for right rear woofer.

Here is my install

The RZ1-2300D is narrow enough to fit in this tight space between the spare tire and the body

You'll need to have the DSP system to fully install the OEM subwoofer. The cable you're finding is likely the pre-wired loom for the rear PDC sensors. I purchased the OEM subwoofer for my non-DSP system a few years ago with a plan to bridge it as an extra bass speaker but I ended up upgrading to the full DSP system. That was way too much of an endeavor and if I had to do it over again I would had left it alone. But im happy with the results. You should consider adding the Sub as in the above post.

One of the reasons I upgraded was that DSP was an 8 Ohm system with a higher output amp and my existing Hi-Fi was 2 Ohm. The OE Sub and the DSP door speakers are 8 Ohm. The DSP main door speakers are also a full-range design (the Hi-Fi are full woofers). Since the OE subwoofer handles all the low frequencies the sound from the doors and dash is much richer. Granted the OE sub doesn't thump spectacularly but it really isn't supposed to, only that the lowest frequencies are instead routed to it for added depth.

Hi Mike,

I stumbled across a factory sub over the weekend and intend to perform basically the same installation you did. Thanks for posting specifics about how you wired the DVC drivers!

Hi Lurp,

I'm sure you will enjoy it.

I enjoyed the sound from my retrofitted DSP sub in my vehicle even with high audio inputs. After putting an Eonon GA6166 HU in I now use the low RCA input direct from the head unit and get a very good result.

Below, you see the DSP connector that I removed and placed a traditional round speaker connector into the hole and also added some foam insulation into the DSP housing.

You can tap into the speaker wires and use the line out converter to supply signal for a mono amp, which will power the sub woofer of your choice.
Stock DSP sub is too weak, and too small to make it worth the work. Make a sub-box and use a quality woofer.

Thanks again for the tips. I was able to harvest the connector and enough of the wiring from the donor X5 that I hope to be able to simply leave the enclosure as-is.

I recently installed a GA5166 (which has a sub output of course) in my SUV, but I'm inclined to simply tap into the high outputs and get a sub amp with an adjustable LPF. I already tore up the interior once to run my backup camera wiring, and that was an exercise I'm not anxious to repeat...

Yeah you might as well go with a proper sub to replace the OEM DSP sub. I run the JL audio stealth sub that fits perfect in the spot and factory concealed. Awesome sound running off of my focal amp.
