Key out, engine off, electrical still on

2006 X5 4.4i was sitting in driveway on hot day. Alarm sounded and I shut off normally with key fob (unlocked doors). Pulled car into garage and shut off, removed key. However, most (or maybe all) electrical stayed on (radio, headlamps, brakelamps, dash lights). After a few seconds dash indicated "Trans Failsafe Prog" and then that error disappeared, then a few seconds later indicated "Engine Failsafe Prog" and that error message disappeared. Dash lights now look "normal" when key is on and engine not running (and key is still in my pocket). Turned off auto headlights but running lights and brake lamps still on. Will probably have a drained battery by morning.

Any thoughts as to what to look into is appreciated.
