Bluetooth Connection Wont Pair

iPhone 6, Version 8.3
BMW Professional Head Unit (no nav)

Bluetooth was working fine then mysteriously lost connection. Now when I try to pair on my iPhone, it says it is unable to connect.

I can see the BT identified on my phone (BMW*****). I have gone through the set up process but I must be missing something.

Here is what I am doing:
1. In driver seat with seat belt on
2. turn key to position 1
3. iPhone has identified the car
4. tap on the BMW***** on iPhone to activate pairing
5. Phone times out with the note that it can not connect.

What am I doing wrong? It is funny, when I bought this X5 last November and looked for videos instructions, I could find a bunch some even from dealerships. Now they all seem to be for iDrive. I have the original BMW manual for the BT. This seems to be different in that it says to hold the icon with the talking face for about three seconds but that still isn't working.
