The closest we can get to all things being equal is to compare to equivalent models - one with AWD, the other without. A E90 BMW 330i runs the qtr in 6.1 second. An E90 BMW 330xi runs its in 6.8 second. Things are not equal here because the AWD systems adds a couple of hundred pounds of weight. Even if they were weight equivalent, the AWD 330i would still have the disadvantage of parasitic horsepower loss caused by pushing power to 4 wheels instead of 2.

I've never seen an AWD outperform its model equivalent 2WD.

Regards, Mike

I agree that it's tough to keep all things equal... but that is the basis for the debate. So we're really talking about equal weight and power... But I do see your point about an AWD system losing a higher % of HP between the crank and the ground (although I imagine some AWD systems are more efficient than others) than a 2WD; I wasn't really factoring that into my hypothetical "all things being equal" scenario, though... I was thinking of the power to the ground being equal on the 2 vehicles.

I've got both, but my TL is a TL-S and has a little more power then the TL.

The X5 feels faster, but the TL-S will take it.

The TL has AWD too, right? Is it an option or standard?

Nope, it's FWD. The RL is AWD. The TL-S has an upgraded suspension and the RL engine.
