Best access to 4.6 oil connection flange?

So the X5 started spotting on the driveway which prompted me to get it on the lift today to find what appears to be an oil leak from the front left of the motor above the PS pump. I am assuming either the o-rings on the inlet & outlet lines are leaking or the ones from the block/flange are leaking. VCs have been done in the last 5 - 6K so ruling them out at the moment.

What is the best path access the flange and is there a DIY or write up out there that I am not seeing in my search? Any suggestions appreciated.

Are you sure you're not having upper timing cover leak? That's much more common than oil connections.

My neighbor happened to have bought one of those phone bore scopes and we poked around for a few minutes without much luck. I would compare it to trying to see the grand canyon through a drinking straw so I was less than impressed; might be better in other situations but not for finding an oil leak. I did notice the plastic fender liner on the drivers side may give a better view so I will remove them tomorrow and hopefully be able to see the source. I think I will go ahead and order the O-rings since they are cheap and the upper timing cover gasket so I at least have some parts on hand.

Thanks for the suggestion

If you are going for the upper timing cover gasket, you might want to change the valve cover gasket at the same time if it hasnt been changed recently. There is also a gasket for the vanos solenoid, and o-ring for the cam positioning sensor. The o-rings on the oil adaptor flange, i think they are acceseable through the driverside wheel well. I changed them while changing the timing chain. Lots of room when the lower timingcover is of. Good luck with your oil leak
