2004 Transmission issue? Maybe?!
Well, I'm starting to run out of things to replace with the original E53 to the family over a year ago... Here is the story... 2004 4.4L sport purchased for $2000... Bad motor... Rebuilt motor and it is still going strong... Trans failsafe after it warmed up... Swapped out the Mechatronic unit and programmed it... Not going to failsafe anymore, but not right... Seems like wrong programming... The trans would shift fast from 1st to 2nd under less than half throttle... Over half would confuse the computer and it would shift into 2nd, but abruptly go back into 1st and nearly tach out the motor... Programmed the trans computer and EGS (mechatronic module) again... Still has the exact same issue... I'm thinking okay, maybe it's a pressure thing in the transmission giving false info... Swapped the trans and put good fluid in it... LG6!!! Reset the engine and trans and out for a test drive... Not only is it NOT better, it is EXACTLY the same, as if I didn't swap the trans... So, I have a perfectly good trans for a 4.4L in my garage... Just sayin!!! I swapped out the TCM with my other 2004 and have again, no change whatsoever!! I pulled the DME and found corrosion on the pins... I cleaned the connectors and pins... and tried it once again... Still have the same exact situation... It's not the fluid. It's not the mechatronic. It's not the trans. It's not the valve body. It's not the TCM... It might be the DME, but I couldn't swap that without programming the EWS and key... I've swapped pedal assemblies with my 2006 in an attempt to clear a code in the 2006, which ended up being a crank sensor issue... So, could it be the corrosion on the DME pins?! I'm not even sure how it got corrosion in there to begin with... Would the DME cause shifting issues?! Keep in mind, the issue is only at almost WOT (full throttle)... And for some reason, the X5 thinks WOT means the trans needs to stay in 1st gear at all costs... If it isn't the DME, I'm looking at a wiring issue... Thoughts?! I'm almost out of options, other than to part it out... Thanks all!!! Cheers!!

You could always swap a manual into it. That would solve the problem
I'm sorry to hear about all of the trouble, I'm not sure what else there is to go wrong on something like this. Does it only do this in the first to second gear shift? or is it impossible to get passed second gear?

My apologies on the part you mentioned... Once past 2nd gear, it behaves as it should... As a matter of fact, once past third, it will down shift into second (as long as I'm past 1st gear speed range) and take off like it should... And continue to shift like it should... I think there was ONE occasion where it didn't act right going down to 3rd and into 4th... But I'm counting that as a bad Monday morning or something... I have considered swapping it to a manual for some time... It is just sourcing the parts that is keeping it from happening... I have to steal a 6-speed from a 2004/2005 545i sport... They just don't have many out there... I found one trans in Ohio for cheap, but it has synchro issues and is so bloody far away... I'm not positive I can null out the electronic transfer case either... Although, I haven't tried... So, it might be possible... I'll try to source some missing parts for the conversion... I think this X5 really wants to be a manual when it grows up... Thanks for the input!! Cheers!!

Does it shift okay while in Sport/manual mode? I wonder if there's some sort of load sensor/vacuum issue preventing the transmission from knowing what the engine is doing.

Unfortunately, it just delays the shift a little in Sport mode... Manual at full throttle will work until it decides it needs to shift back into 1st despite my commands... This is really blowing my mind... If you rule out the logical, whatever is left MUST be the answer to the problem... The DME and wiring are the only two things left that I can logically associate to the issue... Could the DME programming be corrupted, but only associated to the transmission gears? I think that would be a stretch to believe... A little good news is that I think I found a decent priced trans... We'll see if it works out... I need to get some 2004 and up parts still, but most I already have... If I don't have to work tomorrow night, I'm going to the YPIY and get the TCM and DME from the vehicle I pulled the engine/trans/transfer case from and reprogram both of them to Whitney... IF that doesn't work, it's getting a manual conversion... Cheers all!!

Sorry for your troubles. Provided the fluid was filled per the manual, and solenoids are good, then I would look at wiring. I know you swapped the trans, but my guestinate is that 95% of 6hp26 transmissions on the road have one or more bad solenoids. Solenoid life is only 45k or so on them. Past that i would look at the warness. What are the codes?

I swapped those out too with three different sets, with exactly the same results... I probably should have included that test info as it was one of my most recent... I wish I had codes... if I hold the gas to the floor and it does it's crazy confused shifting, it might give a failsafe alarm due to wrong turbine speed compared to vehicle speed... No lights or codes driving like a grandma... Thanks all for the input! Cheers!

One more thing to try: The personalized shifting transmission reset. There's a tutorial on youtube. If you hold the accelerator pedal while the engine is off for 30 seconds in key pos. 2, the transmission is supposed to reset to its factory shift patterns before it learns the drivers style of driving. It's worth a shot

Yep, that was actually the very last thing I just tried... I think I will put this one back on the rear burner until I get the others fixed up... Steering rack in Manny and figure out the steam from the replacement motor in Becky... Maybe a head gasket... UGH!!! Thanks all!!! Cheers!!
