Ringing Sound At Idle

Hey all, I've got a '01 3.0 that is giving off a ringing sound when the car is in drive, stopped at a light...if I put it into Nuetral, the sound greatly dissipates, if not disappears completely....Put it back into drive with my foot on the brake, it reappears...disappears completely when I accelerate...anyone got any ideas?? It seems to emanate from the middle of the engine.....

I thought I had a pinging noise too, but I think it's the sound of depreciation as all the coins fall fall out of my pockets onto the pavement

Okey dokey, thanks for the brutal PM from LA...did not realize things were so rough on the 405...I am simply going to take the high road and suggest that perhaps you have your transmission fluid and/or fluid filter checked: your noise appears to be torque related. If your tranny filter is dirty , or your tranny is low on fluid, it will impede the flow of fluid to the torque converter when at an idle. A dry torque converter will make a noise. When the motor spools up, (when you accelerate) the increased fluid pressure may overcome the effect of the restricted filter and thus the noise goes away. If you have the transmission filter changed, a kit goes for $75 at www.bavauto.com) go ahead and install a new sense of humor module as well.

I haven't really even gotten under my X, but I believe the filter sits above the fluid pan--I think it's a fairly messy job.

The way you are saying, it sounds like I have to take the whole fluid pan off to access to the filter. What kind of synthetic that you would use for the trans? ATF SYNTHETIC MOBIL 1?

To be honest I have not ever really been under my X5...but every trans pan I have seen is as you describe; looks like a small oil pan.

Well, after a week of no ringing sound and after I had added ATF, the sound came back. Stlr says it was the Alt tensioner pulley, not ATF filter or fluid problems. Still warrantied 'til 11/06, they replaced it, n/c. Also replaced motor for steering column--horizontal travel was bound. Hope this helps someone down the line....
