There's no point in throwing away money and time into pieces that you don't need and may or may not work better than the original one.
You should get yourself some scanning software and cables, they offer quite useful information :
- PA Soft : gives codes, access to most modules but not DME on the 4.6 (couldn't get it to work on my macbook with VM Ware and XP)
- INPA & Co : Gives plenty of information regarding vanos, lambda, charge, and the roughness screen that even thoug it doesn't tell you what is wrong, it does show you something is.
- OBD Auto Doctor (native mac generic obdII software, not many out there) : its not the best or the most complete but it allows me to see graphs of fuel trims or lambda sensor and many other over time which showed me something is wrong that I need to cure
I strongly believe if you're going to work on one of these, software is a necessary tool if you don't want to waste huge amount of time and money searching for an issue.

After searching through many threads I ended up ordering the Schwaben by Foxwell scanner. Seems like it should read/do everything I need it to do. I agree that these cars need proper diagnostic tools.
