You'll be much happier using the right tool. After spending an hour trying to get the universal tool to work, I gave up and got the Baum tool. Took 10 minutes to remove an old and install a new ball joint.

Either tool will do the job as they are copies of each other. Both have the flat side even though the CTA images do not show it. I have one in my tool box that I just checked and it indeed has the flat side.

Am I crazy? Or does this look exceedingly like the Baum tool? https://www.amazon.com/Koch-Tools-KT.../dp/B01N5O5K9C

While I don’t have a problem spending $300.00 to buy a premium tool like the Baum, I do have a problem spending it if I can get the same quality of tool for less.

Also this one

Hard to tell for sure. It looks like it could have the necessary flat spot. If it does it is a great price. As long as it doesn't break as Chinese knock offs have been know to do.

Go with the CTA tool which is under $100 works as designed and will do E39 rears as well (as will all of them). The Baum tool is way overpriced for the same exact parts.

These appear to be the same tool with different suppliers
Kommen Tools
Rear Axle Bushing Remover Installer Removal Tool BMW

https://www.amazon.com/Rear-Bushing-...B2RY9KR9XPMCB1

Koch Tools
Koch Tools KT20319 BMW Rear Axle Bushing Tool

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5O5K9C...iglink20444-20
Tips:
Either way just make sure you lube (wheel bearing grease) the threads before you start cranking on the tool. Use a wrench only if you wish to use the tool a second time.
Clean out the carrier pocket after the old joint is removed, remove all dirt, rust, pock marks, etc. Add a light coat of bearing grease to facilitate the insertion. MARK SURE the new ball joint is lined up properly before cranking on it as it will not go in no matter how much pressure is applied. Force it and you will need a new wheel carrier (Upright). It will just slide in if aligned correctly.

Don't forget to remove the C clip on removal and reinsert it after installation. (Clip goes towards the rear!)
