I grabbed 3 MIDs from a pic your part yard for $12 only. 2 are desperately needing a cable and 1 is pretty swell (other than a missing line here and there) so for the cheap price of a ribbon (I tried the AKSpeedo one already and it's not that good as the pressure from chrome clip needs to apply a LOT and the metal just bends back not causing as much as needed) so I'm gonna try the soldering route now I guess. Too bad cause I have 2 AKSpeedo ribbons now that are useless to me. Wonder if I could just heat press those on with a T iron or does a special glue need to be applied first?
Edit: I was able to use the non-iron type ribbon to repair a MID but it's extremely frustrating and finicky. If I didn't have a second ribbon, I'd say f it and pay someone else to do it. Took me about 10 hours to finally get it right by the third time. I'm thinking the iron-on type would be much easier to work with as they will stay in place SO much better than these from AKSpeedo, but yes they do work.

What's the latest recommended vendor on pixel repair? I used VDORepair in the past but they are some other name now and want $299! A few people recommended Bavarianaudio on eBay but I cannot locate. I'm going to go with ODO-PRO unless there is a better place. As always, thanks in advance.

I got a new LCD with a ribbon attached. The first time I only did the ribbon replacement and it was a waste of time as it wasn't perfect, some pixels still didnt work and some buttons didnt work or when they were pressed deformed the panel and made some pixels stop.
Now once this part part below was replaced, all my buttons worked and there was no weird problems. I had a local guy perform the work who had done it before. I bought the part from ebay vendor muehl.007 ad was titled "NEW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR BMW E53 E38 E39 X5 RADIO LCD DISPLAY SPEEDOMETER MID" US $36.99 and listed as 3 available and 41 sold. Bonus tip I found a inexpensive bluetooth adapter that just plugs into the back port of the MID. It has an amazing range and I can even connect in my house before going out to start the car. US $12.24 "Car Bluetooth 4.0 AUX Cable Adapter for BMW E39 E46 E53 Business CD Head Unit" from ebay vendor autopartgoodprice12

FYI: Walmart Canada has then on sale for $8 CAD.
Worth a shot, even tho they are from China (like I'm sure most of them are)
