suspecting an exhaust leak

with the cold weather in the morning I noticed that my X5 creates a noise on startup and then goes away when it warms up. I'm suspecting that I have an exhaust leak and was wondering if replacing the exhaust gasket on the X5 3.0 is easy to do. Any experiences on DIY the exhaust gaskets?

I've changed the oil to castrol 0w40 so it's not the oil, not a timing chain noise too.. similar to valve lifter knock.. not sure if it's vanos since revving the engine doesn't make a rattle noise..

Let's hear the sound. Does it go away after 90 seconds?

An audio clip would certainly help.

Maybe the secondary air pump that starts during cold starts to help warm the catalysts faster... or something related. There is a valve and a couple of vacuum hoses associated with that pump as well.

As for the exhaust manifold... my experience is on E46's, but the nuts are really fun to get to with the engine in situ. Also, at least half of the studs will pull out with the nuts. If it ends up being a gasket further down the line... they are also fun to get at and remove since they are usually fused due to corrosion. Order new ones before starting the job once you locate the leak (if it turns out to be an exhaust leak).

I'll try get an audio clip next time, will a failing/failed SAP cause a check engine light ?

I have a navigator that has an exhaust leak and it's a PITA to remove those studs.. they break and you have to extract them out.. not that fun...

SAP that is failing makes a horrible sound similar to a failing bearing on a water pump or idler bearing: it shuts off with a switch at 90 seconds. It is absolutely obvious if it's working but badly. No code if noisy like my wife's but my understanding is yes code once fails.

SAP is where I was going with asking about the sound but I didn't want to cloud judgement.

SAP is very obvious part just aft of the starboard headlight. For 90 seconds at start it blows like hell and when the bearing goes it sounds like hell

I tried getting an audio after work but it was 54F outside and the noise quickly went away, never got the chance to take the audio when I reach the front of the hood. Does the SAP behave the same way during warmer weather?
