suspecting an exhaust leak

with the cold weather in the morning I noticed that my X5 creates a noise on startup and then goes away when it warms up. I'm suspecting that I have an exhaust leak and was wondering if replacing the exhaust gasket on the X5 3.0 is easy to do. Any experiences on DIY the exhaust gaskets?

I've changed the oil to castrol 0w40 so it's not the oil, not a timing chain noise too.. similar to valve lifter knock.. not sure if it's vanos since revving the engine doesn't make a rattle noise..
