Rich and lean codes at the same time? P0171, P0174, P1093 and others
I have replaced the CCV system, cleaned the MAF and ICV, etc. The codes come and go. It normally was just the lean codes, but now I'm getting the rich codes too and sometimes some others. It is almost always now a P0171 P0174 and P1093 always on. Here is pics of the torque pro scan. https://imgur.com/a/Ar75T The combination and rich and lean baffles me. I haven't had any driving issues or loss in power, fuel economy, etc. I just don't know where to start looking, but I will have to take it through emissions this summer for the last time and need to get it fixed before then. Could it possibly bad/dirty injectors or something like the ICV or MAF? I have zero vacuum leaks and drive with the status monitors up. My fuel trim on both banks is consistent as well as my voltage readings on all 4 o2 sensors. Help?

Does the check engine light come on at idle or cruising speeds? Did you check fuel pressure at the Schrader valve? Can you also check the maf reading on torque app? If you have access to a smoke test, that will be your best bet..

It seems to go away if I drive it a bit full tilt sometimes. Just putting around town it seems to pop up. It comes and goes without being reset.
I haven't checked fuel pressure. Yes I can get a maf reading. What specs on it should I be looking for? Voltage on the maf or how much airflow? I have a monitor setup for maf air flow and it doesn't seem to flutter at all. It holds rock solid.

You will need to look for the amount of airflow. I would think the airflow increases with rpm(or at least in my X5 and I just put a new one). If you know of someone with a e46 330 or an X5, try changing the MAF and see if the reading changes..
Fuel pressure should be 48-50psi after you turn the key in to ignition 2 and once you turn off the key, the pressure should hold for at least 15-20 min and drop slightly after.. We want to rule out that the FPR or fuel pump are not faulty.. Have you looked at the vacuum caps at the back of the manifold? Need to see if they have any cracks. I think there should be 3 rubber caps on the manifold towards the firewall.. I think your best bet is to do a smoke test first to rule out any vacuum leaks...

Do you get any codes about your ICV? If it's old enough, sometimes simply cleaning it doesn't help. Like mine. Cleaned it twice. Didn't work. Replaced ICV, all good. You will get rich and lean codes depending on whether your ICV is sticking open or closed. Mine would do both and I would get both codes.

I cleaned the ICV, MAF, and DISA again. I also found one of the vacuum hoses on the intake tube near the ICV is loose and had fallen out. I put that back and made sure the intake tubes were all thr way in. So far my lean codes have gone away. I still have the rich code. I'm thinking it's a bad cat and that's what's giving me the failure. Luckily I just went through emissions for the last time ever. Soon I'll buy some test pipe headers and just pop in some non foulers to free up some ponies and shut up the light.

Is this an M54 engine? I had a raft of issues on an E46 325Ci (essentially the same as the 330i...) with lean codes - I changed EVERYTHING, as upon investigation, every single item to check/usualy culprit was bggered/had a crack in the pipe etc. I changed the CCV system (falling apart/clogged with emulsion and cracked/sections of pipe missing), inlet pipe elbows, MAF (tried cleaning the old one - and despite usually being exceedingly careful and delicate with things - yep - broke the wire on the old one....), rocker cover gasket, fuel filter vacuum hose ends (hard pipe has soft rubbers to connect - and they perish....) etc etc etc - basically everything on the 50sKid you tube videos. Nothing was a waste of time per se - as every item was leaking/damaged/cracked.
We then lost servo assistance on the brakes when driving home on the motorway one evening - (or rather it was intermittent....) and when tracing the cause, touched the "sucking jet pump" which the hard pipe from the brake booster/servo connects into (opposite end of the hard pipe from the servo itself -which effectively draws vaccum/powers the servo) - and the top of the unit fell off in my hand. This was the source of the final vaccum leak and the codes pulled - and I've had zero issues since. I've included a link below to the part I mean. Worth checking as it is a plastic welded/sealed unit and can start to separate over time, but is not visually obvious unless it breaks off or you blow smoke over it or something... Worth checking as is easy to get to... It's part number 1 (Sucking jet pump) on the diagram - the hard vaccum pipe from the brake servo attaches into the top of the item: RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog There's also a very useful series of videos re how to interpret fuel trims on INPA and hence what might be the cause of the error codes/units to check. Can dig out the videos if you're interested and post links... Oh - I also rebuilt the Vanos using the Beisan Systems DIY and cleaned out the solenoids (much easier than on my E46 M3.....) - as the car was cold stalling - and that fixed that issue too... Is a crying shame that the car is now mechanically excellent - but has a shtty interior - and is worth less than £2k! |

Ya it's a M54B30 in it, same as in the e46 330i and e39/e60 530i. I'll check out that sucking jet pump. It may have a leak somewhere. It doesn't appear to when I have checked it before, as it's where I put the seafoam in every oil change. It seems to have really good suction and the engine definitely notices when I remove the vacuum hose to it or replace it. But it's possible thr plastic welds may have started to deteriorate.
