Steering wheel goes up/down but not in/out

Hello everyone!

Last year I bought a BMW X5 2003 4.4 from a friend who got it new. It has been a bit neglected but it's overall in great shape (162000 miles now). This is my "work truck" as we also have a new 340i Xdrive M-Sport.

I have been slowly fixing up little things (door handles, new radiator, a/c) and I have a couple other things coming up (valve covers, radio, windshield).

I have been reading a bunch of threads here and learning new knowledge but there is one thing I have not been able to find too much info so far.

The power steering wheel will come up and down but not in or out.

It looks like there are 2 separate motors? Which one control the in/out?

I found this one video but it's a little bit hard to follow:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHntPDeX938

Is there a separate fuse for the 2 movements? Any easy way to tell if indeed the motor is faulty?

thank you for any additional information before I start taking things apart...

Here's a link to the online BMW TIS website...it's a "pre-search" using the phrase "steering column adjustment". You can see near the top that there are links to DIYs for the column adjusters: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...olumn+adjuster

From one of the online part databases...you can see what each adjuster does by the info in the part nbr index found below the diagram (on the site) :
#8 = vertical
#9 = horizontal

Click link to go directly to the part number database for the diagram below for an example of the information you can garner from the online parts database:

Fuse index found in the glovebox (of my 06) only lists 1 fuse for steering column adjustment...check yours in case there are slight differences for the 03:

Thank you very much! This is extremely helpful and I will know where to look next time. I suspect more and more that it is the motor itself. I'll report back.

I had a similar issue with my X5 when I first bought it, it was the switches on the drivers seat. (yes somehow they are all linked with the driver memory part.)
I put in a new (wrecker) switch module and I was good to go! steering wheel moved in/out and up/down as intended!
might be a similar thing in yours!
good luck!
