What type of wheels are you running? Perhaps a PO changed the bolts from 19mm to 17mm.

Stock wheels. The only reason I know what fits mine so well is I have a 1/2 inch extension that I keep a 17mm socket on for all my bmw stuff and I used it when I did the wheel bearings and back brakes on the E53.

All of my BMWs had 17mm lug bolts, too...until I got the 06 e53 (not sure about the 85 e30, though). It threw me for a loop the first time I went to remove them...because I brought my 17mm socket to the party...and it wouldn't fit.

If you pull up the diagrams for the e53...the example below for the Style 153 wheels that came on my 06...you can see that up to 12/2005 build date (which includes me)...the part nbr for bolt (#4) is a 19mm bolt (part # 36 13 6 756 298)...then after the 12/2005 build date...it went back to a 17mm bolt (part # 36 13 6 781 153).
