Adaptive headlight year differences ?

Ok so my wife and I each have a X5. I own the older 02 and my wife has the 05. Recently I started to drive the wifes 05 and noticed that the headlights are quite different. The 05 headlights are very active moving all the time. Pull up to a small hill, the headlights move, up a driveway, they move, make a hard stop, they move. My 02 on the other hand, I never notice them moving. They do do the "dance" when turned on, but not nearly as active as her 05. So which one has a problem? or neither? How active is your's?

If they aren't pointing down at start then rise up on start they are either not adaptive or they are malfunctioning.

I estimate about 5 updates per second. Come up to a white wall and firmly brake and you will see them tap tap tap up until the car stops and lurches up where you will then see tap tap tap down.

I have '01 as well as wife. They both have adaptive lights. I thought the lights used the sensor for rear air suspension but hers doesn't have yet the lights self-level.

Does the '02 have HID projector bulbs?

The lights either use the front level sensor (if fitted) or... the front level sensor, as if no self-levelling suspension is fitted, BMW still fit at least one front level sensor for the lighting.

I think we're confusing Active vs. Dynamic. in late '04 you could get Dynamic headlights which swivel with steering wheel input. So perhaps her's are the Dynamic ones?

I wasn't clear on the past-tense nature of my statement. I thought I had read the headlight aim used a rear sensor but I realised clearly that's not (perhaps in all cases) the case. Subsequently I've seen the sensor on my wife's right front wheel I think I had to disconnect while changing the front bearing.

The OP said the '02 doesn't do the "wake up dance" so I'm confident he/we are talking about adaptive (active) not dynamic.

True, but:
" My 02 on the other hand, I never notice them moving. They do do the "dance" when turned on, but not nearly as active as her 05."

They are "quite" different (the 02 vs the 05) because they probably ARE different. The 02 xenons are probably the regular self-leveling type...and the 05 probably has the (new for the facelift e53) adaptive bi-xenon headlights.

Run the VIN of the 05 through a VIN decoder (like www.bmwvin.com ) and see if it is optioned with adaptive bi-xenon headlights. If it is you should see the two options listed below:

  • S522A Xenon Light
  • S524A Adaptive Headlights

The facelift E53 adaptive bi-xenon headlights can move left/right based on steering wheel angle & speed input...so they will act differently than just the regular xenon lights that only move up/down based on the the leveling sensors.

You should be able to google "BMW adaptive bi-xenon headlights" to find videos and other info that explains how they work.

OP said "never notice moving". Even with the basic self-leveling headlights you will definitely see them move every time you turn it on. They have a parked location that's very low when the power is off
