Usually having a "clunk" upon shifting from park to drive or reverse is a worn transfer case motor gear.

Not saying that this is your problem for sure but I'd check it out and replace it or flip it if it's worn....

Thank you for your input. My X5 is 2001 4.4. We changed the transfer case chain 15000 miles ago. There was a clunk and hard shift each time I shifted from park or reverse or drive. If I remember correctly it wasn't equipped with transfer case actuator. Are you talking about transfer case actuator motor gear?

Your pre-LCI car doesn't have the transfer case motor or gear - it's a pre-xDrive, so that's a red herring, as you no doubt know.

Oops, I didn't realize you had a pre-LCI.

Your transmission was manufactured on 19 November 2000 so it has the old piston seal material (unless, of course, it has been rebuilt in the meantime and upgraded)

It is a 2001, 4.4 V8 with the ZF gearbox.
Part number for the gearbox 24001423950 (Realoem)
Hope this helps.
I suggest putting year and model in your signature.
