OH NO THE GEAR WHEEL...

My X5,'01, 3.0 has 240,000 plus miles and has been a solid performer. But in the last month the little Gear Wheel has come on and the tranny continued to work and shift albeit a little herky jerky. But if I switch to DIY sport shift mode it shifts fine. Next time I started it up, no g.wheel. It is the original tranny and it is pampered, filter/fluid changes every 60K. No joke. I am comfortable with the SES light coming on and going off now and then because it doesn't effect the vehicle performance. What about this gear wheel? What repair should I be planning for? Can I repair it? Is it an expensive DIY? Thanks for clarifying.
