Bushing appears fine, but from the videos I've seen online you can't really tell how shot it is until you remove it - most have crumbled in the middle. I plan to try the rolling test when the wife gets home and then just pull them both to scope it out. I'll be able to check the ball joint on the other end at the same time.

What has everyone used as replacement? Seems the top ones mentioned are:

• OEM

• Meyle

• Lemforder

The "OEM" part you have linked to (above) is NOT the correct item - it should be: -

But Meyle and Lemforder are the OEM manufacturers anyway. I went with Meyle HD (about all I could get locally, as it happens).

Yea think I'll do the Meyle.

Couldn't get a good camera angle from inside but my kid stood on the side of the road and got a good shot: http://growfishtank.com/x5/x5-braking.mov

Looks like a lot of backwards movement to me! And I didn't realize how loud it was.

I loaded your video in QuickTime player and you can really see the wheel move back when you step through frame-by-frame.

Put the counter in QT to frame mode and you see the wheel movement between frames 78-79 and again between 200-201. Wow....

I replaced mine with poly. Replaced them with rubber the first two times then decided, screw it and put in poly bushings a month ago. We'll see how they do, but with a lifetime warranty I figure I have nothing to lose.

This is the prime suspect. If you hold your phone out the window and take a video of the wheel, if the bushing is shot the wheel will lurch backwards when you hit the brakes going say five mph

Almost better to do solo. If you video while driving the reference is stationary to the car body.. the very best way is what I did: used a suction cup to mount my phone pointing down at the wheel giving me a perfectly stable reference to the body of the car and I was blown away how much the wheel lurched backwards.

That's the exact test I'm describing and yes that's the motion. In my wife's case you could see and hear a definite thump when the rubber bushing bottoms out.

I don't know how much this stretch with a new bushing so there I'm sure it's some motion but you won't feel that "thump" when it hits a limit

Well you guys called it!

Decided to go ahead and order two whole new Meyle thrust arm/control arm for each side (rather then taking the time to deal with pressing in/out the bushings). Ordered a new Lemforder rod end for the other side of each arm as well.

Finally got around to getting under there to remove and replace this weekend. Sure enough the bushings where shot - as you all suspected. Pics of new vs old below. The tie rod end was super floppy as well.

Front end feels much tighter now and no more clunk or other noises on hard braking!

Thanks again for the help!!

I have to do the same on my wife’s. Looks like it’s finally gotten bad enough to start wearing the tires. Time to fix re he bushings and rotate the tires.
