2001 X5 Sleep Mode

Hi guys,
I have an '01 X5 3.0L & the small orange gear shift light will stay on all the time when the ignition is off overnight. I've read that the early models will have it stay on and later models will have it go out after 16 minutes as the sleep mode begins.

I ask if anyone knows for sure 100% if this light is supposed to stay on or is it a sign that the X5 isn't going to sleep mode?
Thanks in advance.

It is absolutely not supposed to stay on. Once the key is removed a 16 minute timer starts that kills power to that circuit unless interrupted by something. That something more often than not is the FSU which though seemingly functioning normally will not stop pulling power in a way that prevents sleep.

I would pull the FSU and see if the light goes out like it should. Easy to get to from the starboard side of the transmission hump

It is a new OEM FSR that is working the fan normally. So, I'm not sure.

2001 X5 Sleep Mode

New doesn't mean proper function. Was the light going off before the new FSU was installed?

There is a list of items powered by the GM any of which could have the same effect of preventing sleep. Usually when FSU you will get a dead battery out of the deal.

I have two "older" x5 (2001s: actually one is a 2000.5) and they both sleep with the shift light off. It's not supposed to stay on. That said clearly (post 12 as evidence) there are some examples of malfunction that allow the light to stay on when the GM shuts down most of the power.

You can do the same test he did and if you are below 50mA after 16 minutes you just have some minor malfunction that is leaving the LED on.

Just to clarify/verify to us (since we can't "see" what is happening)...when you come back to the vehicle after 16 minutes to check on the little "orange" light...you are NOT making any calls on the P-bus by lifting a door handle or pressing a button on the remote to lock/unlock etc, right?

If you do anything that initiates WAKE criteria on the vehicle, the little orange light will turn back on.

I have to double check wife's sleep. I had my foxwell nt510 attached yesterday to clear about 40 non ses codes and reset the rain sensor (apparently don't actually need the machine just turn the ignition on then off for 20 seconds then momentarily off then back on (not start just on)

I stumbled into a "put to sleep" function but it didn't work but I was inside the car and possibly the motion sensor prevented sleep though I didn't notice it in the list above. (she has several broken door actuators though so they are high suspect if her sleep isn't working)

No, I don't do anything to wake it from sleep mode, I just look in and see the light still on.

I never noticed if it stayed on or not before the new FSU.

I will do a power drain test, just as soon as I replace the blown fuse in my MM.
Thanks for the help.

3-4 mm of alum foil will get you a working 2-5a fuse until you replace

The UIS sensor is what BMW calls the interior motion sensor for 99-up. For earlier build dates it is called FIS.
