I bought it with 115k on it, 157k now. Pretty much have revamped or replaced everything that was a wearable item haha. My Subframe bushings were toast (and I have an auto) so that was one of the first things I did. For a truck that lives on NY roads, it gets beat up daily on the commute into the 5 boroughs, but with a complete suspension refresh (shocks and all) and every rotating item on the engine replaced and a fresh cooling system, I would like to see another 100k out of it. Flushed the trans once when I got it, and Im doing it again before we leave for VA in a few weeks. Mine vibrates too, and I know my engine mounts are bad...those are on the to-do list next week to fix. I also picked up an M56 valve cover to do the CCV conversion with and rip out all that stupid crap underneath the intake that plagues the straight 6 since back in the day.

Underneath, the boots up front look to be in very good shape, no visible rips tears leaks or whatnot to speak of. Slight surface corrosion on some front suspension items but nothing egregious. Steering wheel seems to vibrate more at idle when the AC is turned off and again goes away with even the slightest blip of throttle. Haven’t looked at motor mounts yet but don’t think I can really check those without taking them out entirely?

Welcome!
Steering wheel vibration--May be something as simple as idle is too low since it gets worse when air is turned on (decreases the idle). You can troubleshoot the motor mounts by torque braking. Put it in gear, hold it with the brake and tach up the engine. If motor mount(s) are bad the engine will usually lift up or drop on one side or the other. Suggest checking for codes. You may have a slight miss at low RPMs which is often a small vacuum leak. Might be just a result of fuel with no cleaner in it. If that it can even be cleared up by just adding Techron to a full tank of gas. Can you also feel the vibration at the gear shift lever?

What is the RPM at idle? If to low it will shake a lot. If there is a vacuum leak you will likely have a poor idle. Did you check/replace any of the intake parts yet? (Smoke check ideally)

I put a can of fuel cleaner in this morning with a fresh tank of premium. The car basically sat for the last three years (former owner was in poor health and didn't drive it) save for a few hundred miles so it's possible there was some bad gas in the system? I have not heard any hissing from the intake system but will see if I can do a smoke test on it to look for leaks in the system.

Here’s a pic of idle RPM for reference

I wouldn't do anything until I burned through a tank of gas. Idle is normal RPM. Old gas can cause problems even just sitting for a few months. What cleaner did you add?

Beg to differ on 500 normal. Our two M54 idle around 700-750. I just found a YouTube video where a guy shows how to adjust up from factory 700 to 750.

OP's picture of the display looks like it is close to 700 if the first line represents 500. It looks similar to the idle on my display.

That’s the weird thing, i would assume the dash between 0-1k would be 0.5k but the dash is definitely closer to zero on my tach than the middle of the two. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
