Rear hatch setting.

Gents, gals,
Is there a way to extend the time that the rear hatch stays unlocked when you push the button on the center console. Before the car auto locks it again?

Not on the e53. What is your model/model year? The facelift e53s have the soft close tailgate...if this is closing the trunk before you can get to the rear to lift it up further...then the issue is not central lock programming...you probably just need to adjust or replace the bump stops that hold the tail gate above the height the soft close feature catches on and closes the tailgate.

But the above is totally all speculation because there's not enough vehicle information...anything we write in a reply is all speculation and assumptions because we don't know which set-up you have...nor if there's an addressable issue.

I have an 06 and if I press the hatch release button on the console...the tailgate opens and stays unlocked until it gets pushed to the point that the soft close feature pulls it in and locks it.

Sorry. 04 4.8is with that soft close

Hit the button on the dash. I hear the latch unlock but if I hesitate, by the time i make it to the back, it locks again
That's with all 4 drs unlocked.

Wait, your have all doors unlocked? Why not just use the black button ON the top hatch to unlock the hatch instead of using the center console button?
Also, when you are in x5 and press the button from center console then get out to get to hatch, do you close your driver's door BEFORE you get to the trunk/hatch? If so then the wind force inside the x5 actually is what pops the hatch open a bit then it shuts closed and is a function of air pressure and not a timing/mechanical problem with car

Most times I do use the button. Sometimes I just hit the one on the dash before I hop out.
I can't recall if I'm doing it with the door open or not. That's an interesting theory tho.
I will see about adjusting the bump stops too.

I have the little springs on the struts that actually open the hatch fully when the trunk is opened.
Maybe that is your solution?
I got them after reading about them on this site somewhere.

Yeah. I've seen those. Just don't trust the wife to not back up and hit the button and not let the hatch open up into something.

With this info...then it does sound like your issue is those bump stop/spring thingies.

They should be holding the tailgate up far enough not to be caught in the soft close features "clutches".

This is a common topic so old threads about which parts to get should be easy to find. If I get some time I can do a search and come back and edit with some updates.

(those springs mentioned by jughead are also a way to get around it, too)

EDIT:
BINGO! Got a good hit on my first search...this is a thread from 2015 that has the part nbr and pics...read through the thread to verify that this is the issue you're having: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...ded-stops.html
