What engine do you have? Troubleshooting needed to hone in on the problem can be many causes. The first troubleshooting I would do is monitor fuel pressure at the schrader valve and see if fuel pressure is there when it dies. What codes have you seen? Does it happen regardless of the amount of fuel in the tank?

He was initially baffled as well, but found it was a part he needed to order for the next day. It was somewhat rare for it to fail he said. If this sounds like your trouble, I can look for the part #. It was 2 or 3 years ago.

Well, that was easy... I found the post. The first thought for a failed part was called an IVM and we did have codes, evidently. I do not *know* if it's only on N62s. The thing that got me on the road was the CPS. Hope it's not a waste of your time:

Alas, Dear Boise. I believe I'll stay a bit

It's bad when I remember that.
Your fuel pump can be intermittent when its going out. From experience, you will still get hard cranks and running sporadically as the pump tries valiantly before it dies in agony. It can seem like ignition, but its losing fuel, not spark. Put a gauge on the rail and see what happens.

Yeah seems like a bit longer ago than it was. Seeing the pictures of my lil girl at 11 certainly make me wonder what happened in such a short time to age 14.

Anyway, just adding my thoughts as the OP made me think of the weirdest thing I've had in the E53. (I mean outside of running off the Interstate- at speed) So maybe it is, maybe it ain't as the song goes. (It's a country song. So if it's lost here.. well, thats why).

Thanks
Mine was running like a top. Pulled into a parking spot and felt it die.
Third time it did this st low speed.
This time it would idle but die on pressing gas pedal.
Let it sit overnight, ran fine.
Had it towed once. My mechanic is getting gray hair, only had it fail once. This time no check engine. Changed some tank venting devices last time.
Car is red, hence the name.
