X5M-ISH is on a distinguished road
I just finished changing the door carrier. Unfortunately the two knurls on the pin that inserts into the round hole then rotates 90 degrees to lock the handle in place were so deformed. Basically when the handle was pulled, the door handle would pop out of the door, exposing that cylindrical plastic shaft. I had to gingerly drill a pilot hole down the center of this cylinder, thread it then used a machine screw and washer to keep the handle in the door. Ghetto, but the end result is functional and you would never know that fix was there.

Amazon sent me the wrong door handle carrier so I had to buy one from the parts store this morning at a significant difference in price. However from my observations and since I have seen four of these in the last two weeks, I noticed that the OEM unit was the nicest made. The auto parts unit was very close in quality to the OEM unit. The one from Amazon was garbage and the one from eBay (which broke in only a few days but had hundreds of 5-star reviews) was an absolute POS and the fitment was off (which also may have contributed to unneeded stresses causing the failure).

When the carrier was inside the door and the phillips screw inserted and snugged up (toward front of vehicle), on the opposite side (toward rear of vehicle) there is the square notch that the allen bolt slides through to affix the lock and tumbler to the door and mechanism. This square part of the carrier was an absolute PITA to get it to align and stay in place.

When you say the wrong carrier was it the wrong side or was it front versus back. are usually recommend keeping the cable from the original it’s usually better than the knock off cables
you can convert a front to back or back to front by changing the cable. Can’t do much about right versus left.

I have had to do a very similar repair when the rubber bump on the handle gets too worn down and just pulls right out I think I use this to Alan setscrew.

I would get a handle and carrier from a used car at a junk yard. OEM fitment, very cheap
Then follow this tutorial to make it bulletproof.

Since following this tutorial, my handle works great.
However I've run into a different problem.
My remote key will lock the door but it won't unlock it. So if I want to open the driver's door, I need to keep it unlocked.
I guess one of the motors died

Find my awr-fix for the door actuator. $6 motor is what broke inside the $230 part. When fixing actuator you can make it nearly freeze proof.

You can use the key to unlock a door that won't unlock with remote. (just driver's door)

Are you referring to your pictures on icloud link?
I've seen you fix the motors, just not sure I can find all the little parts to put it back together.

Interestingly enough, once the door is locked with remote, I can't open it by turning the key inside. Must be another issue there as well

Explain that better.

If you lock with the remote I think you are saying that you can't use the key in the door lock cylinder to unlock.

To electrically unlock the doors you turn the key 45° but if the motor doesn't work you need to turn the key 90° to engage the mechanical unlock (same in reverse for locking)

Autoparts way.ca is selling Febi DHC for $71CAD. I just installed mine last night and it's perfect. Comes with new screws too.
Just an FYI.
