Regarding the Nav DVD drive, can I just unplug it and remove it, or does it need to be tied-in to the system also? The DVD drive tries spinning the 2004 (!) disc, but I get a disc read error showing on the headunit screen.

The stock BMW system does a search for all components. If it doesn't see them all you get an error message. The Seicane unit I have circumvented that check when I wired it correctly. Prior to that I had sound for 20 seconds or so and then nothing, Then I went to no sound at all because I made it worse.. As for the subwoofer, there was a wire from the Seicane unit to trigger the subwoofer to come on. Suggest you check if power is getting to it. FYI- I have DSP and use an aftermarket subwoofer as you are not taking advantage of the best the unit has to offer unless speakers and subwoofer are upgraded. Will be better but no comparison to upgrading the speakers and subwoofer.

I don't think I have a subwoofer (no DSP - just Nav). I'm sure the sound could be better, but frankly, I'm just not very picky about that. Just buying the Android unit is about $300 more than I had hoped to spend on "radio", but the other features it offers are more valuable to me: backup camera, modern navigation, I-Bus, etc.

I'm beginning to wish this truck had just come with a basic Business Radio!

For upgrading, besides trimming the dash, it is the easiest way to put in a new aftermarket radio.

It's very easy to physically check. The subwoofer is one the right cubby in the trunk under the fuse panel.

Also on your screen, there is a DSP menu.

I definitely don't have DSP; I just wasn't sure if it was possible I had a small sub hiding somewhere about which I was unaware. So, no DSP, no subwoofer.

My engineer friend is going to take a look at it for me to see if we can determine where the fault lies. In the end, I guess all that's going to accomplish is to determine whether or not I need to buy an amp. I could probably accomplish the same using Crowz' method.... buy and connect my new Android unit and if it doesn't produce sound, then buy a replacement amp.

As I've worked through all this, I've come to the conclusion that putting in an Android setup is inevitable. It would be nice to have modern tech such as a backup camera, onboard system monitoring, onboard navigation, etc. Plus, if I decide to sell the vehicle, it would definitely add value over having a functioning antiquated original system.

When I bought the X5 in January, I knew there was no sound coming from the system. I guess I thought at the time that a little cleanup on a crusty amp connection and maybe a $50 screen replacement and I'd be set. I certainly didn't envision spending $500ish on fixing up the radio! Makes my bargain X5 less of a bargain! Oh well... it will be a nice upgrade in the end.

So is it safe to say that with most any Android installation I'll be able to disconnect/remove the OE Nav DVD player in the back? That would be annoying to get constant errors popping up from the non-functional unit.

I'm still leaning toward the Xtrons unit on Amazon. It just seems like the best value I've come across: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...5Z5MU6OM&psc=1

Yep. Feel free to rip that out along with the TCU (bluetooth module) as well. No reason for it to be there either. When I did my upgrade I ended up with an entire 3 shelves of electronics; dvd nav unit, CD changer, TCU module, DSP amp, radio unit, aux cable, sirius/xm module, various other wiring, etc.

Yep, nothing wrong with that Xtrons unit. I believe Prop has one in the E46 or E39... LOL or E53. Can't remember which.

If you took out your amp, did you have to put in some sort of aftermarket amp, a non-DSP BMW amp, or what?

Yep, replacing it with 3 aftermarket amplifiers because I am doing a ridiculous audio build. Completely wasteful and over the top. I don't recommend anyone do what I'm doing.

So what you're saying is that you'll be able to drive by the lake and kill fish?

I kept my Bluetooth module, I was surprised when it still worked without the radio module.

Since the OEM mic is powered and in the best location and well it's OEM, I left it.

So now my phone connects to both the Android unit and the TCU and I use the TCU strictly for calls. It's all streamless and still get the call information on the screen.

Having "Hey Siri" to text and calls makes it very useful when driving. Even for navi, I just say "hey Siri, take me home" and it starts right away.
