Brake Bedding

Should I be doing this on a new X5 with 45 miles on it?

I would. Technically, you can just drive and the pads will eventually bed themselves into the rotors. This will happen all by itself over several hundreds/few thousands of miles all on its own.

So do you guys recommend swapping out the pads for something better than stock, or is it only a minimal difference??

So why don't dealers or BMW just use the less-dusting Axxiss pads as OEM that alot of owners eventually put on.

Because the design spec called for performance, and they designed a performance pad (for an OEM pad). After performance, other design criteria ranked lower.

I suspect that manufacturers get more warranty claims for squealing brakes than they do for dust (lots vs none) so it makes sense for them to use a pad that is very unlikely to ever squeal.

I don't there're anything out there that's "better" than stock pads for street use. The main reason many are switching to aftermarket street pads ie Axxis is to eliminate brake dust while still maintaining OEM braking performance. They're also easy on the stock rotors as well.

Performance-wise BMW pads are among the best. They just produced way too much dust.
