While I'm at it (asking silly questions, that is). Just when are the lights closest to the grill (the innermost lights) supposed to be on? On my X they are never on. Aren't they supposed to be on with the high beams? I have yet to check the fuse, which I will do this morning. The fogs come on with my low beams (when turned on). I'm afraid, in my exuberance to fiddle with my new toy (both the X and the iCarly) I may have turned them off by changing a code. If that is possible. I think I resett back to factory settings but they still don't come on. Anyone know where the fuse is for them?

If you mean the inner headlights and you have bixenon headlights, those would be used for flash to pass only. Just pull on the turn signal stalk instead of pushing it for high beams.

BMW X5 - Access the Hidden Onboard Computer (OBC) Functions.

*edit* note that this info (linked above) contains an error - you need to add all FIVE digits from your VIN (not four as stated).
This document (nor any other of the ones I've seen about the hidden OBC menu) doesn't account for the fact that apparently, at least on my 2005 3.0L, I am able to open the hidden menu any time just by holding down the check control button on the right for about 10 seconds. I ran thru the routine unlocking the menu with the key in Position 1 went to lunch, came back and started the car, held down the button, and immediately was able to go to test 7 to show my engine temp. it was already unlocked and ready to access. I was thrilled. next best thing to a full time digital temp readout. I'm gonna start using this on my short commute to work to see exactly how badly I am screwing up my motor every day if it is never fully warmed up

What's a check control button? High or low cluster? I would love a short cut into the hidden menu

I hadn't tried that. Flash to pass only. Who would have thought, certainly not me obviously. I do have the adaptive xenons. If they are all that is on when my high beams are on, unfortunately I'm not very impressed with my xenons. Is there a way, changing coding with my iCarly perhaps, to keep them on with the xenon high beams? I live in deer country and drive to work at 5am, prime deer time. I need all the light in front of me I can get. I'm in the process of polishing the faded lenses, that may help a little. Any other suggestions are welcome, and as always, thanks in advance.

Have I got an auxiliary water pump?

Start by aiming them properly! Studies show that 90% of all cars have improperly and too low aim on their headlights. There's is no reason to have focused beam lights point down at all much less than 1-2° down. That system for aiming was for when the light came out in a cone not only down.

Set your beams so the driver side is zero degrees. The passenger side will rise maybe 1-2° and beautifully illuminate the world including all the road signs like you will not believe.

Aiming hid as if they are incandescent will throw away 50-70% of the light you can be using!

One thing you can code is to leave fog lights on with high beam. If you aim the high beam properly AWAY from the car not 50' from the car you can fill in the close zone with the fog

It depends on the LCM version (C23/C24) but your 2005 should have this firmware and the additional halogen high beams can be easily coded in NCS Expert.

Here's a link I helped write showing how to do it.

Yep - that's correct - they all do that. Once it's unlocked...

BTW, if you pull the battery, you have to unlock the BC again...

Any comments on my error codes (Post #30?) . I checked the "flash to pass" lights and they add a lot to the vision at night. I hope I can utilize Overboost's link to get them turned on. I will check the aim also. Many thanks to overboost and andrewwynn.
