I removed the right axle without even touching the brakes or the axle nut. So there was no need for this tool as things played out for me. There's even, as i remember, some doubt about whether this tool would fit on our CV joints. OP - Good to see you are familiar with the various horror stories regarding CV joint/boot work. But it can go easily too. And what ends up being difficult on one car / person / set of available tools may end up being no problem for the next guy ... So be ready to adapt your plan and hope for the best.

I've done the outer boots without touching the inner CV joint - just separating the axle from the outer CV joint.
It takes a second person (or a third arm) but it's very quick and easy this way. ![]() (thanks to omodos for the picture).

I'm guessing it rolls back into the inner CV? Far enough to get it out?

No, you swing the knuckle out to get it clear. You need to ensure you don't pull on the axle or it will pull out of the inner joint! Vice grips on the axle help you brace it in place.

Hence the need for a second person. You sit under the car with the vice grips holding the axle from moving outwards, your helper pulls gently outwards on the knuckle, while you place a soft metal drift (alloy rod) against shoulder of CV inner race and give the drift a smart smack. The axle just pops from the CV...
