Rough idle, stall, misfire problems.

So I just bought a 2003 X5 4.4i for super cheap (206,000 miles on it). Daughter inherited it from her father who passed away. She drove it to her house and it sat for close to a year. When she went to start it for the first time it ran rough and died. So I thought I'd give it a shot. From what I've been able to see he took care of it and had it serviced regularly. Before he passed he had all the cooling lines and the engine gaskets replaced.

First thing I did was pump all the old gas out of the tank and I put in 5 gallons from Chevron with two bottles of sea foam. I also replaced the fuel pump. I took out all the old spark plugs (which were wet with fuel) and put in new NKG plugs. I've tested both crankshaft position sensors with my multi meter. When I touched them to my wrench they didn't go all the way to 0, but I think it was .04 so probably fine right? I cleaned the throttle body (which already looked pretty clean) and the MAF. I also charged the battery.

When I start the car sometimes it'll start strong then quickly idle rough below 1,000 rpm, sometimes it'll backfire once from the intake while starting. If I pump the gas it won't really make it much higher than 2. If I unplug the MAF I can get the RPM's high and hold, but once I let off it dies right away. I replaced the MAF with a reconstructed Bosch from O'Reilly but the same thing happens. The OBD reading shows on both MAF's 10 g/s and it'll quickly dip to 6 for a second then back to 10. So I might have been lucky and gotten a bad MAF, but I'm hoping I can get some more direction from you guys on what other things I should try next.

I'm not a mechanic, but I'm mechanically inclined and I've done head gaskets, I brought a 2001 330i back to life by reading forums and watching YouTube. So I can follow instructions real well, but not experienced enough to diagnose. If you guys can just give me more ideas of whats wrong that will help me out a lot. In the mean time I'll keep searching through forums.

Codes I'm getting
P0343 Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit High
P0363 Misfire Detected - Fueling Disabled.

P0363 means for one, cyl 3 is mis-firing. swap that coil with another cylinder and see if it chases it, at least youll know if a coil is bad

The last number in the above code indicates which zylinder is misfiring. So, once you swap it to another zyl it may change to the corresponding location.

Be sure the battery is healthy. You can get a live reading by cracking the cluster. You do this by adding together the last several digits of the vin after the letters. (IE: 56713 = 22) 22 one being the number of times to push the stalk on the odometer. Here's a video. The guy is kinda long winded, but youll get it.

Once you have the cluster open, before trying to start it (cold) just turn the key and see where the voltage is. It should be high 12+ in most cases and around 13.7 while running.

In short these are very sensitive to power and require a solid battery. Given the amount of time it sat, it could be part of the problem. Try running it with the car hooked to another running vehicle using the +/- under the hood.

As you may have discovered the battery is in the rear beneath the spare tire and compressor for the rear air bagged suspension. Its burried. An AGM battery like Duralast is the way to go should that be showing a low reading.

Sounds like you are on the right track.

Thank you so much 740ilDuke! I was annoyed because the code didn't seem to point me to a specific cylinder. The coils look old so I will try that today. The battery is new and I charged it to full, but I will watch the video and look at it again.

You can swap the coil with another cylinder and see if the misfire follows the coil. If not the coil is not the problem. A misfire in these modern computer controlled fuel injected engines means that the computer has determined that the cylinder is not producing as much power as the other cylinders. Could be a cylinder with low compression or a bad fuel injector that isn't providing as much fuel as the other injectors. Before throwing parts at it find out why you have a misfire. I would start with a compression test of all 8 cylinders. An engine that just sat around for over a year could have developed rust on an open valve so now you have a cylinder that isn't sealing properly so now it is down on compression.

I cleared codes and swapped the coils tonight, but the same code persists. I have a few questions. In my OBD reader the MAF shouldn't read a steady 10 g/s right? Also if the MAF was bad the engine should still be able to run without stalling after a minute or so?

Thank you upallnight. I will do a compression test. I am curious about the injectors especially if they've been sitting with old fuel in them. But does it mean anything that when I pull out all the plugs that all 8 are wet with fuel? It's not getting enough air right?

Nope, it means the engine is flooded and the engine will not start if the plugs are wet and the cylinder is wet. I would have changed or at least dried and cleaned the plugs and used compress air to dry out the cylinders.

If the plugs are wet then you are getting injector pulse to the injectors.

10 g/s is way too much at idle. It should be around 3-4. Turn off all electric devices (AC, radio, lights) and check it again. You could try unplugging the MAF and it will default to a throttle position map. This will light up your dash like a Christmas tree but if it runs, it will let you know if your MAF is at fault.

Since the misfire code is still in the same cylinder after the swap, the next thing to do will be to look at the plug and do a compression test. What type of scanner are you using? Are you sure the unit for the MAF is set for G/S and not lb/M?

There's your problem, you went to O'Reilley and bought a reman BOSCH and not a genuine Siemens.
