Anyone updated their android head unit?

Now that my Seicane head unit is out of warranty I’ve been toying with the idea of updating it’s MTCD & the actual Android version itself. Before I go trail blazing all by myself I thought I’d see if anyone has ventured down this path yet. It’s currently running Android 7.1.2 it’s a PX3 unit.

I did an Android PX3 5.0 to PX5 6.0 SOM board upgrade on my Eonon GA6166 and it was a very good success. Search my posts for 5he details.

Dunno if you can or would want 6.0 or if my solution would work with your unit

My rule of thumb with updating.

Is it stable now?

Does it mess up any at all?

Is there some feature that I know the different firmware has that I just have to have?

If its a yes, no and no then it doesn't get updated.

It takes at least a no, yes and damn skippy to get me to update an android radio..

Its risky to start with because you may brick it during the update leaving it a paper weight.

But even if your ok going for it, with a car stereo you want STABLE. A wacky acting radio can ruin your driving experience beyond measure.

Best source for firmware updates if your determined to do it anyway is the xda forum site as mentioned.

I have one eonon that was turned from junk to a cool radio via an update. I never really found the other ones I have done to be as stable after the flashings.

Crows, mine is “mostly” stable. The biggest issue I’ve had is once every 2 weeks or so the music app pops up it’s unresponsive & I have to close all the apps & all is good again. My wife’s unit, which is the same unit, bought 6 months later unfortunately crashes often. I want to update mine to allow steering wheel controls while using the apple car play adapter I have. I don’t know if you’ve kept up with the iBus app on the Facebook page but I have & those guys are up on their stuff. The Xtrons have no issues using the steering wheel controls with apple car play adapters, so “if” I were to “brick” my head unit I wouldn’t be upset, it would be my “excuse” to buy an xtrons! The reports I’m seeing are the px3 units run really well on android 8 & I’d love the split screen functionality. Another update they have is someone figured out the 7 band equalizer doesn’t really do anything (something I’ve suspected for awhile) & have created an update for our px3 units that fixes it. In short I have several reasons for wanting to change out & upgrade the software, but mostly it’s to unlock the factory lockouts.

Ps the newer versions of the iBus app can code the DSP amps to the proper setting without needing a dedicated programmer. Pretty cool stuff going on over there.

At a minimum, any upgrade should give you 2GB RAM to give decent performance.

The 4GB RAM in the PX5 upgrade that I did is very snappy in my Eonon GA6166.

Mo RAM is mo betta
