What is this for?
I'm sure that I am the only person without a single clue, but hey I'd rather ask and prove my dumbassedness than have another question rattling around in my head. : ![]() Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk

Its a photovoltaic detector aka light sensor. Not a led. It doesn't "light up" it only detects the presence of light in the cars interior.
I'm sure it effects the way it handles climate control for the car. Probably leans towards a cooler setting during the daylight hours vs what you set the temperature too.

Awesome thanks.
I guess that explains why I never saw it light up...Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk

Just a plain old ambient light sensor for the IHKA control panel...there's also one on the instrument cluster and the back of the interior rear view mirror (if you have the Electrochromatic (auto dimming) mirror).
Check back...I'm looking through my old pic stash to find BMW tech data that shows/explains what these sensors are. EDIT: Here's info for the photo transistor built into the instrument cluster:

Well that info about the coolant sensor is very interesting! I can't seem to cut and paste that part though. QS, could you maybe add that part into the "temp gauge recode" thread?

It's a bit like the "mystery" red LED just to the right of the BC button on the MID units (#3 below) - you don't even really notice it until one day you think "what the heck is that for" and then it bugs you until you find out...
BTW, it indicates the operation (or setting) of the Aux. Vent and/or Aux. Heating. And of course, this one IS in the user manual (unlike the sensor in the IHKA panel as queried by EODGuy).
