Center Console Cubby Top Tray?

Hmmm

Okay folks. Possibly the dumbest question of the year here.

In my 4.8is auto. I have the Center Console that has the arm rest that can be raised in two parts:

1) the very top part when lifted presents me with a black tray that has three or four channels that look like they are pen holders? What exactly are they supposed to be for? I just fill em up with coins and pens. But I am intrigued as to their correct use ;if there is one)

There is no wiring so no phone etc.

2) under this we have the main deep cube box which is just a deep storage box.

It is the upper threat that annoys my curiosity. Any thoughts please.
