Honestly at that age id do everything recommended. The timing chain guides are the only real thing that will kill this engine so It's a good idea to knock those out asap.

Gosh, all that money for those fixes? I do all the repairs myself - gawd, I owe myself a lot of money
Amazing winter pics you got there!

Titz looking X, even if it is/may become like owning an old boat, cost-wise...
![]() Serious azz tire set. Exc snow driving pics, cool stable! These older E53s are like an addiction. I know, our '01 is getting a little long in the tooth, and tired. GL, mD

I visited the mechanic. They say the threads in the camshaft bearing caps are messed up, likely from a previous owner/mechanic over tightening them. They are now on the hunt for replacement camshaft bearing caps from a M62 engine. They think they're the same on a 4.4 and 4.6 engine.

I'll check out Vitek next time. The work is done, bill paid, my cc is on fire. Happy to have the car back in my hands. Steering/front suspension feels amazing now. The timing chain guides were quite worn (they said), so it was about time to replace the timing chain anyway.
But, they found the battery safety terminal (cable) has been arcing (part of the red plastic around the cable is melted). The BMW repair kit is over $500 so i'm going to look into getting a replacement off a junkyard X5. |
