Since it has the business cd, that is your radio module.
The empty slot infront of the battery is where a radio module would be if you had a navigation screen. On the left cubby nothing seems to be missing. That is where the navigation dvd rom drive and cd changer would be at. The three plugs that are not connected to any thing by the battery is for the pdc module.

Any other suggestions on what to diagnose? I've checked all the fuses, front and back. Suppose I could pull the amp and see if anything looks weird.

It's hard to tell... but if you have the HiFi option like it says in your post. It looks like you are missing the Hi-Fi amplifier from the left rear compartment by the TCU (bluetooth module).

I found the amp, I thought it was missing too. You just can't see it from the angle of that picture. So far it looks pretty clean but I guess I'll pull it and see.

Since 99.9% of the radio failure posts lead back to the amp I decided to get a used amp off ebay and it immediately worked. Figured I could screw with my old amp while still having a working one that way.
There is visible corrosion on the old ones pins and wire harness. So on a possibly related note, cleaning out the water channels. Do I just blow out the two small squares behind the rear hatch up at the top? Do I need to open anything else up to make sure any crud can escape? I blew air into them with my air compressor and could hear air going through them . |

Glad you got it sorted.
Be careful with too much air pressure. You can dislodge the tubes from the drains. Then you'll have real issues. I think most clean them out with a wire or some other "pokey" type of instrument. There are threads though that should detail it.
