obd2 scanner/programmer
just purchased my first bmw, had the car 1 week and the propshaft sheared and took the sump with it lucky me. luckily it was covered under the warranty i got. car is a e53 3.0d 2004 im having a little problem in reading from the obd2 ive had a search through the forum and google. i have checked the fuses, all are fine its a 2004 so it doesn't have the 20 pin connector under the hood the obd port has power to it. ive tried different scanners (3 different ones) none of them would connect. do i have to have a special scanner/programmer to connect to it just to read codes? what would people recommend? is there a program that i can use to have a play with things in the modules? many thanks

After a ton of research I bought the foxwell nt510 and happy with it. I'd buy the 520 now it's got a different type of keypad and I hope better display

If you're just getting power and your reader is saying stuff like not supported or not connected, etc. then you could have a bad block (OBD2) like I had. Cracked block or broken wire. I just swapped my block for one from a junked 5.
As for the scanner Foxwell NT-510 or NT-520 is the best all in one and easy to use, although slow going through everything and unless you're trying to get your X5 running while staying ahead of a rampaging mob you should be taking your time to do it right the 1st time (not like I did)  Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk

Yeah the actual block that makes up the OBD2 under the dash. I wouldn't say it was hard, only that it was a pain in the ass to re-pin as mine was cracked and when I plugged in it let some pins go free range.

I use Torque Pro on my head unit and the Foxwell is great since it's small and I keep it in the X, so no laptop needed.
As for the OBD2 block problem I had I have to agree with you as I think I'm the only one in the world that had that happen to... I'm just lucky that way Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk
